She was initiated by the Sigma Iota Chapter in 1962 and served as chaplain and president. She then joined the Buffalo Alumnae Chapter (1965-68) and did graduate work at the State University of New York at Buffalo. In 1968 she affiliated with the Boston Alumnae Chapter, holding many executive positions, including chapter president and is currently serving as chapter treasurer. She served the fraternity as Phi Province Vice President from 1978-86 and then as Phi B Province Officer from 1986-93, when the National Executive Board appointed her as chairman on Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies, Inc. Arlene served in this position for ten years and then returned after her successor unfortunately passed away while in office. She is currently the director for the SAI Bold Notes project, a position she has held since 2009. Arlene holds the Sword of Honor, Ruby Sword of Honor, Rose of Honor, Rose of Dedication, Diamond Sword, and Ring of Excellence. She was awarded the 2006 Philanthropies Distinguished Service Award at the Triennial Convention in Orlando. She is a member of several honorary and professional organizations: Pi Kappa Lambda, Pi Lambda Theta, Phi Kappa Phi, and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). In addition to her extensive work with SAI, she has taught music in several Nursery Schools, at an elementary school (grades K-6), and at The Fay School (a private school grades 1-9). She performs on piano and flute throughout New England and has a private studio in her home. Her husband, Harry, is a Friend of the Arts. D O R O T H Y W H I N E R Y S P E C I A L L E A D E R S H I P A W A R D Dorothy Whinery Special Leadership Award recipient Arlene Jospe Veron with National President Leslie Odom Miller. The Dorothy Whinery Special Leadership Award is given for outstanding leadership in the national organization. Originally named the Special Leadership Award, it was renamed the Dorothy Whinery Special Leadership Award to honor her years of service as National Executive Secretary (from 1956-1992). It has now been presented fourteen times.
