Fall 2018 48 PAN PIPES were recognized in the SongDoor International Songwriting Competition as a finalist and received an honorable mention. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree summa cum laude from Loyola Marymount University, and her Master's in Composition from California State University. Susan Ihnen Susan Ihnen was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Pi Chapter at Iowa's Drake University in May. A pianist, she has worked in the Des Moines metro area as an accompanist and freelance pianist for the past 23 years. She started her career as a church accompanist in 1995, and, that same year, as the staff accompanist at West Des Moines Valley High School, where she worked for 22 years. In 2017, she became a full-time staff accompanist at Drake University where she plays for voice studios, student rehearsals, and performances, conducting courses, and teaches lessons in addition to playing for the two choral ensembles. She served as music director for the West Bend Summer eatre for four years and the Windsor Heights Lutheran Church for 17 years. She attended the University of Kansas and Wartburg College. Dr. Si Millican Dr. Si Millican was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the eta Gamma Chapter at e University of Texas at San Antonio in April. Dr. Millican teaches courses in Instrumental Music Education at the University of Texas at San Antonio and works with the Music Education Performance Lab and the Institute for Music Research. He received his Bachelor's and Master's in Instrumental Music Education from the University of North Texas in Denton with a concentration in Instrumental Conducting. Dr. Millican received his Doctorate in Music Education from e University of Okalahoma in Norman. Prior to his university work, he taught high-school and middle-school in Arlington, Lewisville, and Belton. He is also the author of Starting Out Right: Beginning Band Pedagogy. Dr. Millican's research focuses on the pedagogical content knowledge of teaching band. He has presented his research at the Symposium for Music Teacher Education, e National Association for Music Education Biennial Conference, and several state music organizations. His scholarly work has appeared in the Journal of Music Teacher Education and Update: Applications of Research in Music Education. He has also published in e Instrumentalist, Southwestern Musician, Bandmasters Journal, and School Band and Orchestra. Dr. Millican serves on the Executive Board of the Texas Music Educators Association as the College Division Vice-President. He is also on the Editorial Board of Update: Applications of Research in Music Education. He remains an active clinician and adjudicator across the state of Texas and is on the Active Concert Band list of the Texas Music Adjudicators Association. Millican arranges marching band music for schools across the United States. Dr. Douglas T. Owens Dr. Douglas T. Owens was initiated by the Gamma Zeta Chapter at Virginia's Old Dominion University in September. Dr. Douglas T. Owens is an Associate Professor of Music, the F. Ludwig Diehn Endowed Chair of Instrumental Music Education, Graduate Program Director, and a past Chairperson of the Old Dominion University Department of Music. Dr. Owens is the director of the ODU Jazz Orchestra and teaches several music education courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has also been a music educator at the elementary, middle and high school levels in California and Wisconsin. Dr. Owens continues to serve as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator of wind ensembles, concert bands, and jazz ensembles. Most recently, Dr. Owens has presented research and performed (with the Virginia Wind Symphony) at the Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference. He earned his Bachelor's in Music Education and Master's in Trumpet Performance from the University of Colorado. He received his Doctorate in Music Education at the University of Northern Colorado. Robert Wicks Robert Wicks was initiated as a Friend of the Arts in September by the Moscow-Pullman Alumnae Chapter. Bob teaches Elementary Music, Choir, and Orchestra in the Lewiston School District. Deeply involved in community music, he plays trumpet in the Lewiston Community Band, the Clearwater Chamber Ensemble, and in Lewiston Civic eatre's pit orchestra. Bob's graduate research at the University of Idaho focused on the fine-tuning of assessment strategies for music education. Subsequently, he was invited to serve on the Idaho Department of Education Curriculum Review Team which created new Idaho Core Arts Standards for elementary general music. A staunch supporter of SAI for decades, Bob oen collaborated with the collegiate SAIs, performing on musicales and assisting with service projects. Bob has continued the connection by presenting informative programs at SAI alumnae chapter meetings on education assessment strategies and creative ways to implement Idaho's newly- adopted elementary music teaching standards. Bob has been an active member and leader in the Idaho Music Educators Association (IMEA). He is currently the President of Idaho District II IMEA. He has given presentations for IMEA and Northwest Music Educators conferences, and for Lewiston School District teachers. In Nov. 2016 the IMEA conference recognized Bob's excellent contributions, naming him "Idaho Music Educator of the Year." Dr. David Weiller Dr. David Weiller was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Las Vegas Alumnae Chapter in April. He celebrates 34 years as Director of Choral Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) School of Music, having received the UNLV William Morris Award for Excellence in Teaching, the UNLV Alumni Association's Distinguished Faculty Award, and the "Teacher of the Year" Award in the College of Fine DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS Owens Wicks FRIEND OF THE ARTS a man or woman who is supportive of and actively involved in the arts at a local or regional level Ihnen Weiller Millican
