Winter 2019 Volume 111, Number 2 Dear Readers, I along with many other music lovers, was thrilled to learn that the Smithsonian had declared 2019 the " Year of Music." As one who enjoys music as a part of my daily life, I welcome the opportunity to listen, learn, and share new music experiences with those around me. Whether music is your vocation or avocation, I encourage you to visit the weblink listed on page 8 and explore the variety of daily online concerts, podcasts, and museum collection spotlights offered. In the spirit of the Smithsonian's campaign, this issue of PAN PIPES features articles on a variety of topics, including a special baton's trek home and the experiences of SAI members abroad. This issue also contains continued 2018 National Convention coverage, a symphonic analysis of Henry David Thoreau's journal entires, and a jaunt through Mendelssohn-Haus in Leipzig, Germany. The winter issue has traditionally been the "composers" issue, and you will see that theme present throughout. You can also learn more about the activities and new works of many of our SAI Composers Bureau members by viewing the 2019 Annual American Composer Update online, available for download at: sai-national.org Would you or someone you know like to share an article, review, interview, or personal story in PAN PIPES? We welcome new music related items to share with our PAN PIPES readers. Please contact me at SAIPanPipesEditor@gmail.com so we can discuss your potential involvement.
