Winter 2019 26 PAN PIPES DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS D R . E R I C M O E Dr. Eric Moe was initiated as a National Arts Associate in September by the Pittsburgh PA Alumnae Chapter. He is currently the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Composition and eory at the University of Pittsburgh and previously held visiting professorships at Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania. A founding member of the San Francisco- based Earplay ensemble, he currently co-directs the Music on the Edge new music concert series in Pittsburgh. He earned a Bachelor's in Composition at Princeton University and his Master's and Doctorate in Composition at the University of California at Berkeley. He has received Numerous grants and awards for his work, including the Lakond Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and a Guggenheim Fellowship; commissions from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Fromm Foundation, the Koussevitzky Foundation, the Barlow Endowment, Meet-the-Composer USA, and New Music USA; fellowships from the Wellesley Composer's Conference and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts; and residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, Bellagio, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Ucross Foundation, the Camargo Foundation, the Aaron Copland House, the Millay Colony, the Ragdale Foundation, the Montana Artists Refuge, the Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians, the Hambidge Center, and the American Dance Festival, among others. As a pianist and keyboardist, Moe has premiered and performed works by a wide variety of composers. His solo recording e Waltz Project Revisited - New Waltzes for Piano, a CD of waltzes for piano by two generations of American composers, was released in 2004. Other all-Moe CDs are available on New World Records (Meanwhile Back At e Ranch), Albany Records (Kicking and Screaming, Up & At 'Em, Siren Songs), and Centaur (On the Tip of My Tongue). e Sienese Shredder, a fine arts journal, includes an all-Moe CD as part of its third issue. D R . S E R G I O R U I Z Dr. Sergio Ruiz was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Kappa Chapter at University of Nebraska–Lincoln in November. Dr. Ruiz is the Director of the Glenn Korff School of Music and Professor of Music at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has previously served at Georgia College & State University, Sam Houston State University, and Sul Ross State University. An International Steinway artist, his performances on Spanish-speaking radio broadcasts have aired throughout South and Central America. He performed concerts in México, Belgium, Germany, Colombia, Czech Republic, Bolivia, and Ecuador, and he has appeared live on KUHF 88.7, e Front Row, and on WGTE FM: Live from FM 91. Dr. Ruiz studied piano in Barcelona, Spain under the tutelage of pianist Alicia de Larrocha. Dr. Ruiz was a member of the Hemingway Trio, a group dedicated to commissioning and performing works by American composers while touring oGermany and Belgium in Summer 2015. With performances at Interlochen Arts Camp, Dr. Ruiz was also the soloist for Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with jazz orchestra, and he also completed a recording project of the chamber music of Bolivian composer Gustavo Navarre. Dr. Ruiz also enjoys interdisciplinary performances. He has performed in various projects with modern dancers. He also performed in a more recent project with a piano quintet arrangement of Spanish composer Manuel Da Falla's Nights in the Gardens of Spain, which included the poetry of Spanish poet Jorge Guillén, and newly-created drawings by American artist Ken Procter. In demand as an adjudicator, lecturer, and master teacher, Dr. Ruiz balances his performance calendar with being a dedicated teacher. He has judged several piano competitions and festivals in the U.S. and South America. In 2009, he won the Texas Music Teachers Association Collegiate Teacher of the Year. In 2011, he won the Faculty Excellence in Service Award. He also served as Artistic Director of a Youth Music program in León, México and is summer faculty at Interlochen Arts Camp since 2008. Dr. Ruiz was the Creator and Artistic Director of a Latin American Arts and Humanities Festival—Festival (de) Inspiración. He holds a Bachelor's from Santa Clara University, a Master's from Cleveland Institute of Music, and a Doctorate from Rice University. S T E V E S H A N L E Y Steve Shanley was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Iowa City Alumnae Chapter in October. He coordinates the music education and jazz studies programs, teaches music education courses, and directs the jazz band at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is also the music director and conductor of the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band, a professional ensemble that performs 18 concerts each summer. Prior to his full-time appointment to Coe, Shanley spent 11 years teaching middle and high school music in the Cedar Rapids Community School District. Groups under his direction earned over 40 Division I ratings at concert band, jazz band, marching band, orchestra, and show choir festivals, and over 75 of his students were selected for the Iowa All-State Band and Jazz Band. He directed five high school ensembles in performances at the Iowa Bandmasters Association conference and his band was also selected to perform in the NATIONAL ARTS ASSOCIATE a man or woman who is nationally recognized for distinguished contribution to the arts
