Spring 2019 24 PAN PIPES Society of America, is a conductor, teacher, singer, and clinician. He is the Director of the Carnegie Mellon Marta Sanchez Dalcroze Training Center and Director of the Pre-College programs at Carnegie Mellon School of Music. He teaches Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Dalcroze Pedagogy for the CMU School of Music and has taught every BFA in Music Performance and Composition at CMU since 1999. He taught Dalcroze Eurhythmics and directed the Opera Workshop at Pittsburgh's High School for the Creative and Performing Arts from 1994–2018 and served as Chorus master for Opera eater of Pittsburgh from 1999–2010. Stephen was featured as the hangman in Leonardo Balada's early opera Hangman, Hangman! He also performed in the world premiere of e Town of Greed for the Naxos label, and he was a featured speaker at TEDxCMU 2012. Neely enjoys traveling to present hands-on workshops and clinics in the US and around the globe focusing on the overlaps between music, the body, esthetics, performance, experience, and design. Stephen Neely is currently completing a PhD in Interaction Design at the Carnegie Mellon School of Design. Dr. Tammara K. Phillips Dr. Tammara K. Phillips was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Eta Pi Chapter at Stetson University in March. She is Instructor of Flute and Visiting Lecturer of Music at Florida's Stetson University. She received her Bachelor's from Stetson University, her Master's from James Madison University, and a Doctorate from Florida State University. Prior to her appointment at Stetson, Dr. Phillips served on the music faculties at Bethune-Cookman University, Carl Sandburg College, Daytona State College, Eastern Florida State College, Florida State University, Seminole State College, and Western Illinois University. As an active member of the Florida Flute Association, Dr. Phillips is the Vice President and Coordinator of Competitions, and served previously as the Program Chair and Guest Conductor for the Honors Flute Choirs. She is also a frequent adjudicator for the Florida Bandmasters Association, judging such events as All-State auditions, All-County auditions, and State Solo and Ensemble festivals. An avid baroque flute player, Dr. Phillips was awarded 3rd Place in the National Flute Association Baroque Flute Artist Competition in 2009. She is a founding member of the baroque flute ensemble Traverso Colore, comprised of past and present students from Florida State University, and she is a founding member and principal flute of the New Score Chamber Orchestra (Orlando) and the Southern Winds professional wind band. She also regularly performs as substitute principal flute with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. Chelsea Saunders Chelsea Saunders was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Lambda Phi Chapter at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in March. Saunders is a large supporter of the UMass Marching Band and the music community in Western Massachusetts. During her time at UMass, Saunders was both the Summer Recruiter as well as the A/V Manager for the marching band, in addition to working as a tour guide and earning her Bachelor of Music Education degree. Aer graduation, Saunders became one of three music directors for the Springfield High School of Technology and Science, working with over 500 students in the band program, as well as the music theory and ethnomusicology classes. She is also the creator and founder of e Serendipity Project, a motivational speaking company that conducts workshops in high schools and colleges that promote teaching empathy through self-love. Dr. John Zarco Dr. John Zarco was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the eta Gamma Chapter at the University of Texas at San Antonio in December. John Zarco is Director of Bands and Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he conducts the UTSA Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and University Band. His responsibilities also include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in conducting, wind literature, and music education. He also participates as one of the clinicians and head director for UTSA Summer Band Institute. Prior to his appointment at UTSA, Dr. Zarco served as Director of Bands at Millersville University in Pennsylvania and as a public school instrumental music teacher at Saratoga High School, in Saratoga, California. Dr. Zarco received a D.M.A. in conducting from the University of Minnesota as well as B.M. and M.M. degrees from California State University, Sacramento. In addition to his work at the university level, Dr. Zarco has conducted the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio (YOSA) Symphonic Winds and Philharmonic Winds. He has held office on the Executive Board of the Texas Music Educators Conference and now serves as the College Division Chair for TMEA Region 29. Dr. Zarco is active as a guest clinician and conductor, with memberships in the College Band Directors National Association, the Texas Music Educators Association, and the Texas Bandmasters Association. His book, Rehearsing the Band, Volume 3 is published by Meredith Music and distributed through Hal Leonard. Zarco DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS Chapters may nominate a person for initiation as a Distinguished Member. Distinguished Memberships of four types are offered by the Fraternity: Member Laureate - an initiated member of the Fraternity who has achieved international distinction in the music profession. She may be a performer, composer, teacher, author, musicologist, or philanthropist. Honorary Member - a woman who has achieved international distinction in the music profession who is not an initiated member of Sigma Alpha Iota. She may be a performer, composer, teacher, author, musicologist, or philanthropist. National Arts Associate - a man or woman who is nationally recognized for distinguished contribution to the arts. Friend of the Arts - a man or woman who is supportive of and actively involved in the arts at a local or regional level. Phillips Saunders Neely
