PAN PIPES Spring 2019 27 REVIEWS SARUMBA- MUSIC OF PETER LIEUWEN, VOL. 3 Performed by: Allen Vizzutti, trumpet; Emetine Pierre and Lavard Skou Larsen, violin; SOLI Chamber Ensemble; Deutsche Kammerakad- emie Neuss, Lavard Skou Larsen, conductor; Moores Symphony Orchestra and Slovak National Symphony Orchestra, Franz Anton Krager, conductor. MSR Classics (MS 1583) The first piece on the album is Sarumba for 2 Violins and Chamber Orchestra, which was premiered by the Deutsch Kammerakad- emie Neuss on October 23, 2016 in Neuss, Ger- many. This piece combines samba, Brazilian rhythms, and a violin duet cadenza. Sarumba alludes to elements that appear most com- monly in modern jazz including frequent 7th, 9th and 13th chords. This work also heavily uses Latin percussion instruments to include maracas, congas, timbales, and cabasa. There is a fierceness to this piece that is somewhat unpredictable whilst maintaining melodic lines. The next piece is Chamber Symphony, which is presented in three movements. The inspiration for this piece takes its inspiration from the text from Shen khar venakhi (Thou are a vineyard), which is an ancient Georgian Orthodox hymn to the Theotokos. Shen khar venakhi Thou art a vineyard shen khar venakhi, akhlad aqvavebuli. You are a vineyard newly blossomed. norchi k'etili, edems china nerguli. Young, beautiful, growing in Eden, (alva suneli, samotkhes amosuli.) (A fragrant popular sapling in Paradise.) (ghmertman shegamk'o vervina gjobs kebuli.) (May God adorn you. No one is more worthy of praise.) da tacit visit khar da gabrts'qinvebuli. You yourself are the sun, shining brilliantly. The first movement, Nature-Light and Spirited, is very boisterous with pastoral and contrast- ing phrases. The second movement, Love, is fashioned similarly to a love song and features a low pedal tone that references harmonic language found in most music from as early as the 10th century to as recently as 21st century compositions. The third movement, Cosmos, is an exciting end to this Symphony. The piece features grand gestures featuring marimba, vibraphone and piano. The third piece on this, Quad Concerto for clarinet, violin, cello, piano and orchestra, was premiered by the Moores Symphony Orchestra under Lavard Skou Larsen on March 5th, 2016 in Houston, Texas. This piece was inspired after a performance of the composer's other piece, Overland Dream, which contains a simi- lar instrumentation that sparked a dialogue with the orchestra and composer. This piece is lively and upbeat and rhythmically complex. The piece predominately features klangfar- benmelodie, which is where a musical gesture starts within one instrument group and is fin- ished within another. The last piece on this album is Concerto Alfresco for trumpet and orchestra. This piece was a first prize winner of the Doc Severinsen International Composition Competition in 2013. The guidelines for the Doc Severinsen International Composition Competition are that the piece must incorporate jazz and clas- sical element, dialogue between the soloist and ensemble, and use of melody. The world premier was performed by trumpet soloist Allen Vizzutti with the University of Tennessee symphony orchestra under James Fellenbaum. This piece in the simplest term is fun. Beauti- fully and musically performed, Concerto Al- fresco for trumpet and orchestra makes a great end for this bold and energetic album.
