Spring 2019 2 PAN PIPES Dear Members of Sigma Alpha Iota, B efore you read any further – go back to the inside cover of this issue of Pan Pipes. Our next National Convention will be held in Greensboro, North Carolina on July 29-August 2, 2021. That's just around the corner! I encourage everyone to save the date now and start planning to be in attendance. In an effort to whet your appetite for our next National Convention, this issue of Pan Pipes contains several articles highlighting events from our 2018 National Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona. These include summaries of the Music Therapy workshop conducted by four of our members and our dynamic Keynote Address from Dr. Kirk Randazzo. As we celebrate our successful fundraising campaign in support of Pan's Cottage, the MacDowell Colony has announced the appointment of a new Executive Director, Phillip Himberg. We welcome him to this illustrious position and look forward to working closely with him in the coming years as Pan's Cottage continues to be one of SAI Philanthropies, Inc.'s long standing projects that all SAI chapters learn about and support. As we all can attest to, we joined our beloved Fraternity because of our "sincere interest in music." As a music professor at one of the leading research institutions in the country, I am continually impressed by the many students on my campus who choose to continue their musical activities in college for a variety of reasons, the biggest one being the joy that music brings to our lives and to the lives of those around us. To this point, I was quite moved by the article written by Claire Purcell on the transformative power of music. As our Fraternity year winds down, we welcome those new members who have joined our ranks and pledged themselves to further the cause of music in the name of SAI. Just because the academic year takes a break for the summer, doesn't mean that our music making needs to do the same. Share your love of music today, this week, this month, this summer! Embrace the joy of music in your life! Fraternally, Leslie Odom Miller, National President A WORD FROM THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT Dear Readers, A s we put together a new issue each quarter, I am always delighted to see how diverse we are as a sisterhood. Our members have many different musical experiences, interests, and skills, which allows for a nice variety in articles for us to share with you. This time around, we get to travel around Germany exploring the former homes of two music masters, read an award winning presentation on women composers, relive a bit of the most recent SAI National Convention, and see the results of a choir survey inspired by a music education conference session. As spring turns to summer, many of us may find a trip planned for simple pleasure or professional development. If you have the chance to add a musical component to that trip, I encourage you to do so. Perhaps it could involve a visit to a unique museum or collection, attendance at a live performance, or new knowledge gained during a weekend workshop. Or it could be simply reading that new music-related book that has been sitting on your bedside table. Whatever it is, enjoy it and then consider writing about it to share in PAN PIPES! Would you or someone you know like to share an article, review, interview, or personal story in PAN PIPES? We welcome new music related items to share with our PAN PIPES readers. Please contact me at SAIPanPipesEditor@gmail.com so we can discuss your potential involvement. SAI Roses, Christine Bruns, Editor EDITOR'S NOTES
