Dr. Jennifer Zoellner Marshall is a Collaborative Pianist for East Tennessee State University and Organist and Choir Director of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City, TN. She received her Bachelor's Marshall Degree in Applied Music (Organ) and German from Newberry (SC) College, her Master's Degree in Organ Performance from Winthrop University, and her Doctorate in Organ Performance with a minor in Music History from the University of South Carolina. A member of the American Guild of Organists and Pi Kappa Lambda, she has served as organist, pianist, and music director for several churches. TOPEKA continued from page 8 knew that while insurance would repair and replace structures and furnishings, the music library at the high school would take years to rebuild.  Topeka Alumnae Chapter immediately launched a music drive.  Donations came from all directions, and JOPLIN continued from page 8 of the U.S. Constitution. He turned his talents to a piece he eventually titled "The Other Side of Storm." "It's not 'The Other Side of the Storm'," Bird explained. "The storm caused so many other kinds of storm as well." He met with Joplin area teachers, including C.J. Huff, Joplin superintendent of schools. "I was starting to formulate the idea of a choir," he said. "Dr. Huff asked me, 'Are you going to write for children?' I said, 'Of course I'm going to write for children.' Just because they're children doesn't mean they weren't touched by this. Then I felt that this piece would probably need narration, so I contacted Duane and Gwen Hunt, and Duane said that he would write the narration." BRUBECK continued from page 13 In 2007 he received a Living Legacy Jazz Award from Kennedy Center and the Arison Award from the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts. His international honors include Austria's highest award for the Arts, a citation from the French government, and the Bocconi Medal from Italy. The London Symphony Orchestra, acknowledging their long association, presented him with their prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. The most recent honor from his alma mater, the University of the Pacific, is the President's Medal of Achievement presented by Donald V. De Rosa. Dave Brubeck served as chairman of The Brubeck Institute that the University of the Pacific established in his honor. Dave Brubeck's most recent recording is a highly praised solo piano album Indian Summer that was named 2007 Album of the Year by Douglas Lytle of bloomberg.com. — DaveBrubeck.com included substantial contributions of concert band and jazz charts from the 35th Infantry Division Army Band.  On Sept. 28, 2012, band members received 8 large boxes filled with donated music.  They immediately sat down and played through one of the new charts to celebrate.                  — Jane Jepson Topeka Alumnae Chapter Bird also searched out poetry that fit his work. "I found poem after poem that, taken out of context, fit perfectly," he said. The Pittsburg production featured PCMS seventh and eighth grade students under the direction of Virginia Darling, a soprano solo by Sarah Elizabeth Williams, an Oklahoma native who has sung with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and the Tulsa Opera, and a tenor solo by William Vance, Pittsburg, a friend of Bird from high school days. "The Other Side of Storm" is a threemovement work running about 45 minutes. Col. Shelburne conducted the Joplin premiere of the work and also conducted the Pittsburg performance. Bird said he chose to have PSU do the second performance of "The Other  Side of Storm" because other universities Above, the Kappa Nu sisters held a Rachel's Challenge event at the university in November. JOPLIN continued from page 9 with her, we proceeded to purchase items that will benefit the schools in the most direct ways: mutes, shoulder rests, and a $100 MR Music gift certificate were sent to the students. We also created and sent a Certificate of Recognition and Appreciation for Ms. VanHorn for all of her hard work as well as a gift certificate to Qdoba for her to relax and have a meal on us. Professor Shane Williams, a Lindenwood University music professor, presented these gifts along with a letter from the Kappa Nu sisters to all of the students. They were very appreciative and grateful for the donations. Katie Paszkiewicz is Editor and Fundraising Chairman of Kappa Nu at Missoiru's Lindenwood University. "It was important to me to bring this work to my alma mater," he said. "I want PSU to have the first university performance of this on record, then anybody else in the world can have it." Bird earned a Bachelor's Degree in Music, a Bachelor's in Music Education, and a Master of Science, all from PSU, before receiving a Doctorate in Music from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He taught at elementary, middle school, and high school levels in Missouri for 30 years, then taught at the Keene State College of the University System of New Hampshire until his retirement.
