DONALD REID WOMACK • • NEWS: Highwire Act was released on the CD Geumeul Bumda (Embracing the Zither) by Seyeon Park. Womack was one of 16 composers, performers and scholars invited to participate in a two-week workshop on Korean music hosted by the Gugakwon (National Center for the Traditional Performing Arts) in Seoul. The composer also organized and hosted a two-week festival of new music for pipa, featuring Zürich-based guest performer and pipa virtuoso Yang Jing. In addition to numerous workshops and educational activities, the festival featured three concerts and the world premieres of seven new works. PREMIERES: Sori, Sooyeon Lyuh, haegeum, I-Bei Lin, cello, Donald Womack, janggu, commissioned by Ms. Lyuh, Seoul Arts Center, South Korea. 'Aina, which was commissioned by the flute, clarinet, piano trio Palisades Virtuosi, received its premiere in Honolulu; also, New Jersey. An Enveloping Rain, Yang Jing, pipa, Anna Womack, viola, Lai Yi-Chieh, guzheng, Honolulu Music Festival; also, Elements, for solo pipa; also, Lanai, Hawaii. Film Music News: The classic documentary Monument to the Dream has been re-edited to the original stereo sound track, digitized and made ready to show on the IMAX screen in the theater under the St Louis Arch. The National Archives choose the film John F. Kennedy 1917-1963 for the 6th Annual Charles Guggenheim Tribute Program at the William G. McGowan Theater in Washington, D.C. Sept. 27, 2012. Both music scores are by Robert Wykes. STEPHEN L. YARBROUGH NEWS: Stephen Yarbrough saw the publication of three of his works in 2012: Kenyon Songs, Seven Poems of Jane Kenyon (mezzo, orch), In Memoriam, SSAATTBB and Alleluias for Orchestra were all yarbrough brought to publication by Ars Nova Press. Yarbrough's Julian Trio (pno, vl, vc) was commercially recorded by the Rawlins Trio, and will be available May, 2013. Spring and Summer 2012 saw the completion of two works for string orchestra, Christmas Joys for the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, and LyricWood Overture for the LyricWood Orchestra in Mitchell SD. Both works will be premiered later this year. Dr. Yarbrough has recently begun work on a song cycle for tenor Scott Piper at the University of Michigan. Texts for the cycle are selected poems of Missouri poet Jim Thomas. Two of Yarbrough's orchestra works are featured in SDak Tourist Department videos, each highlighting the beauty of South Dakota's land and wildlife. YEAGLEY NEWS: The premiere of David Yeagley's 80-minute movie score to the 1920 silent film by Norbert Miles, Daughter of Dawn, was June 20, 2012, at Oklahoma City's Dead Center Film Festival. The film and score were screened at the Santa Fe Indian Market (New Mexico), in the Santa Fe Native Cinema Showcase, Aug. 8, 2012. Most recently, Daughter of Dawn was seen and heard at the Cameron University Theater, in Lawton, Oklahoma. All screenings have met with unusual success. Dr. Yeagley's symphonic score is received with great enthusiasm. Dr. Yeagley was commissioned by the Oklahoma State Historical Society in 2007. The score was finished in 2008.
