The purpose of the camp is to build confidence and empower young women through music while surrounding them with positive female energy. The camp lasts one week and is open to 2 nd through 12 th grade girls. It is a female centered environment in which all of the attendees, all of the instructors, and the vast majority of volunteers are female. A local rock group is featured each day during lunch, and it is required that 75% of its performers must be women. Throughout the course of only one week these young ladies form a band, learn a new instrument, write a song, decide on a band name, and design a logo. On the last day of camp, the girls record their song and perform it the following day at a local performance venue. This past year, the camp included nine different bands of girls from all over Fort Worth. In addition to musical instruction, the girls spend time getting comfortable in their own skin by participating in punk rock aerobics, showing off their singing skills during snack time karaoke, and attending special sessions on topics such as marketing and emotional awareness. Two members of the alumnae chapter served as volunteer instructors during the camp. The chapter held a special fundraiser to help raise money so they could purchase a drum set, two microphones, and two microphone stands for the program to use this year and in future years. B U F FA LO Eta A , Region VIII The Buffalo Alumnae Chapter has formed a partnership with a non-profit organization, Buffalo String Works. Buffalo String Works was begun 5 years ago on the West Side of Buffalo NY for refugee and immigrant children to learn how to play violins and violas. Initially there were 15 students in the program and now there are 85. Some students now also play cello and bass as well as violins and violas. Students are from Korea, Cambodia, Burma, and other countries. They asked for donations of used string instruments and then hosted "showers" for String Works where the gifts included white boards, strings, rosin, stickers, notebooks, and music stands. Several chapter members presented musicales at local retirement homes and received honorariums for these musical programs. They put this money toward a matching grant with SAI Philanthropies, Inc. They were able to purchase 2 new student- sized violas for the program. These violas were presented to Yuki Numata Resnick, the current director, and the students on August 19th at the group's summer camp.
