40 Fall 2018 PAN PIPES 2019 SAI Annual Awards Philanthropies My time studying music therapy in Thailand was beyond incredible and I am so thankful for every opportunity and experience I encountered. Throughout the six weeks, I studied with music therapist, Dr. Dena Register and many of the professors and students from Mahidol University in Salaya. On the weekends we we fortunate enough to travel around the country, experiencing Thai culture and trying so many new experiences. Every week we had experience working at Siriraj Hospital in downtown Bangkok, Sirindhorn Rehabilitation Center, and Bong Fu Fa Orphanage. At each of these locations we lead several sessions with many different populations, such as the pediatric unit, palliative care patients, newborn babies, children with special needs, and adults recovering from strokes and traumatic brain injuries. From these wonderful opportunities, I learned so much about my major and myself, professionally and personally. One experience that continues to stick with me was during a weekend excursion where I participated in rock climbing on a beach in Krabi, Thailand. I had never done this before and just the thought terrified me. However, thanks to the encouragement of all of the amazing friends I made on our trip, I decided to go for it. Surprisingly, I made it to the top! Getting up there gave me a sense of empowerment, realizing I had just conquered a huge fear! With this new confidence boost in my abilities, I felt a transfer into my music therapy work. I began to feel more confident and comfortable rather than nervous in sessions. During our adult group session at Sirindhorn Rehabilitation Center, I found myself coming out of my comfort zone and leading an impromptu drum circle. This was the first time I had lead something that was "unplanned" and adaptive with the clients and their abilities. As I reflect on my time spent in this beautiful country, I realize how much I have grown not only in the willingness to open my mind to new ideas and experiences, but the growth I experienced within my major as it relates to my self-confidence and the connections I was able to make with my clients." — Amelia Dolce A Note From Thailand Kappa Lambda initiate Amelia Dolce spent six weeks studying music therapy and exploring Thailand.
