36 Fall 2018 PAN PIPES 2019 SAI Annual Awards Philanthropies Beta Epsilon University of Evansville, Beta A , Region V Bringing renowned violinist Rachel Barton Pine to campus for a two-day visit in February 2020. Events will include a concert with the UE orchestra (performing a concerto written by Chevalier de Saint-Georges), a masterclass, and local educational outreach with her pedagogical books for young violinists with music by composers of color. Lambda Lambda Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Kappa A , Region II The Young Musician's Project: day-long event open to high school students interested in music. The goal for this project is to foster a deeper love and understanding of music for the community of Kingsville and other cities in the surrounding area. It will consist of fun and interesting lectures, a warm-up class, a masterclass, and a recital given by faculty and sisters. Zeta Nu University of Texas at Arlington, Kappa C, Region II Will purchase, install, and implement a streaming audio and video system for all of concerts in the recital hall at UT Arlington. Goals are threefold: 1) to reach people who for various reasons (health, mobility, scheduling, distance) are unable to attend concerts in person; 2) to further showcase the talents and exceptional music that UT Arlington students and faculty create; and 3) to help train Zeta Nu sisters in technological tools they can use both during and after their time in college. Kappa Upsilon Kansas State University, Theta A , Region II Will hold a benefit concert to support research and preservation of the Konza Prairie Biological Station. Various individuals and small ensembles will perform pieces themed around the prairie and nature in the stone barn located at KPBS headquarters. Before and after the concert there will be educational information and games about the prairie for children and families to enjoy, and a musical petting zoo. Theta Chi University of South Carolina, Tau E, Region VI Will support a five-day guest artist residency and workshop on the topic of music and race relations at the University of South Carolina School of Music in March/April of 2020. Resident guest artists will include: composer and trumpeter Terence Blanchard, the Kronos String Quartet, and conductor Valérie Sainte-Agathe. Related activities led by guest artists and music and African American studies faculty will occur throughout the week. SAI members will support with logistical help (marketing, transportation, facilities setup), sponsoring and hosting a reception for the participants, conducting a workshop for the San Francisco Girls Chorus members, and ushering at the concluding concert. Theta Gamma University of Texas at San Antonio, Kappa A , Region II Will host "The Healing Power of Music" Symposium on campus. Featured speakers include Carole White, PhD, RN from The University of Texas Health Science Center School of Nursing, Anne Stacey-Robbins, Texas Director of Student Programs with Music & Memory, Dr. Tracy Cowden, Professor of Music and Chair of the UT-San Antonio Department of Music. The Symposium will explore the ways that students, teachers, medical volunteers, and others can enable those struggling with Alzheimer's, dementia, and other cognitive and physical challenges to reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories.
