Spring 2020 6 PAN PIPES GRACE NOTE S helby Grady MacFarlane, a former National Executive Board member, passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2020. Shelby was initiated into the Beta Psi Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota at East Carolina University on March 17, 1957. She majored in piano and graduated with a BS in Music Education. Shelby served as Music Director at Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, was an elementary music teacher for the Carroll County (MD) public schools, and was a private teacher of piano. Music was her life and she continued to play through the years. Shelby held affiliations with the Cincinnati, Washington, and Baltimore Alumnae Chapters. Shelby served the Baltimore Alumnae Chapter as president and vice president. She became Iota Province President/Province Vice President in 1987, then served as Iota A Province Officer until 1997. At the 1997 National Conven- tion Shelby was elected as National Vice President, Extension and Fraternity Development and served from 1997-2006. In 1999, at the direction of the National Executive Board, she established and served as the Chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee (1997-2000). During her nine years in office as NVP Extension and Fraternity Development, Shelby installed forty collegiate chapters and eleven alumnae chapters; several chapters also reactivated during her ten- ure. Awarded the Sword of Honor in 1986, Shelby was recognized for her work in the Fraternity by receiving the Rose of Honor, Rose of Dedication, Wreath of Achievement, and Ring of Excellence. Former NEB Member Shelby MacFarlane Dies To learn more about Vandoren Artist-Clinicians and to read Lindsey's article in full, visit: www.dansr.com/vandoren/artists/regional-artists L as Vegas musician Lindsey O'Connor, an initiate of Alpha Lambda Chapter at Michigan State University, is a Vandoren Artist-Clinician and performs exclusively on Vandoren and Yamaha products. e Vandoren Artist-Clinicians program aims to "enhance the quality of the music experience through education and the assistance of Vandoren. ese highly trained professional educators and performers engage students through educational and fun sessions. e clinics they conduct cover a broad spectrum of topics…" Lindsey is currently the president of the Las Vega Alumnae Chapter and previously served as Delta A Province Officer. She received a MM in Saxophone Performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she is currently a Doctoral candidate, and a BM in Saxophone Performance from Michigan State. She is the Saxophone & Clarinet Paraprofessional for Clark County School District and is also the Woodwinds Coach for the Las Vegas Youth Orchestras Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Band. A Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM), she maintains a private woodwind and piano studio of more than seventy students at Family Music Centers Academy. She listed her five important keys to building and maintaining a successful studio: passion, scheduling, communication, goals, and encouragement. Under Communication, she wrote: "Not only is scheduling important to discuss, but so is progress (and the occasional hurdles, too). It is important to have these conversations with students and their parents. Weekly feedback, both successes and opportunities, is essential. I also send out reminders for upcoming deadlines and keep students up to date about events and opportunities both in and out of Las Vegas." She also shared: "I am so grateful to have a career doing what I love, and that I am able to share my passion for music with others on a daily basis.
