P A N P I P E S Fall 2020 11 COMPOSERS motivated to compose these works for any film, or any concert, or making money in any way. ese works are the essential expressions of my human need for music. My very best ideas, the music I personally needed to hear, music which no other composer could write for me. Not even the great composers of the past, people I will always admire, composed what I need, here and now in the 21 st Century. is is the challenge of a mature artists, to create works which are relevant and descriptive of their place and time. Most importantly, the new work satisfies my personal artistic needs, using rhythms, melodies, harmonies, textures, and instrumentation I had not used before. A problem arises in the 21 st Century. e men who taught me techniques of composition for symphony orchestra are no longer with us, and few living people are able to do what they did. My teachers were American symphonist, Paul Creston, and British symphonist, Peter Racine Fricker. With cuts in music education, even at major universities, finding a competent teacher is more difficult than ever before. Young people in their 20s, with talent and ambition to compose Classical music, might believe no one is currently available to be their mentors. is is especially true for composers living in small towns, like Escanaba, MI, far from the buzzing action of New York or Los Angeles. One main purpose for writing this article is to announce: I am available Over the next five years, I will accept composition students, who I feel are capable and sincere in their ambition to compose Classical music, both chamber and orchestral music. e instruction will be mostly online, and it will be free. I need no money from talented young composers. I would enjoy passing on my skills and knowledge to younger people who will make good use of what they learn. I have always admired the work of hard-working music teachers, and I want to be one, like Clara Embs and Conrad Beck.
