P A N P I P E S Spring 2021 7 T hough the events of the 59th Inauguration were altered in many ways by the ongoing pandemic and social distancing requirements, celebratory music was still front and center throughout the day and for the events leading up to it. A number of SAI sisters and affiliates were honored to be involved in that music making. Sisters of the Kappa Kappa chapter at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA were among those who performed two musical selections with the university's Human Jukebox Marching Band, under the direction of band director Kedric Taylor, during the "We Are One" virtual Inauguration Day event broadcast live online and on television. e ensemble had one week to prepare the pieces during their holiday break, which required members who were able to return to campus and relearn the songs and drill. ey performed We Are One by Maze featuring Frankie Beverly while spelling out "JB 46" to honor Biden and Outstanding by e Gap Band in the formation of "KH VP" for Harris. Sisters involved in the performance included Elisa Hood (clarinet), Tatyana Aldrich (clarinet), TyAnna Randle (piccolo), and Janaba Saaka (piccolo). e ensemble had performed at three previous inaugurational parades (in 1981, 1993, and 1997) and was thrilled to be able to be involved again this year. "e roses performed beautifully," said chapter president Danni Hall, "and represented our amazing organization, Sigma Alpha Iota." You may view the entire performance online at: https://youtu.be/Jys3_grVcmY SAI Composers Bureau member Julie Giroux was pleased to have her piece Integrity Fanfare and March performed during the Inaugural Ceremony. Played as Kamala Harris was introduced, before being sworn in and making history as the first female Vice President of the United States, it was also the first time music composed by a woman had been played during the inauguration ceremony. e President's Own Marine Band, under the direction of Colonel Jason K. Fettig, included works by six other living composers in the prelude and ceremony musical program: Kim Archer, Peter Boyer, Adolphus Hailstork, Maj. Ryan Nowlin, Jim Stephenson, and John Williams. Giroux has published a large number of classical works with emphasis on original compositions for Wind Band, which are published by Musica Propria and distributed internationally. With over 100 film, television, and video game credits, Giroux has collaborated with dozens of film composers, producers, and celebrities including Samuel Goldwyn, Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood, and many others. She has won individual Emmy Awards in the field of "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Music Direction". When she won her first Emmy Award, she was the first woman and the youngest person to ever win that award; she has won it three times.
