Spring 2021 2 P A N P I P E S A WORD FROM THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT EDITOR'S NOTES Dear Members of Sigma Alpha Iota, T his issue of PAN PIPES highlights our abilities as SAI's to persevere under adverse situations. While the world basically shut down in March 2020, our members were adjusting to the "new normal" as we entered the unknown of a global pandemic. The fall saw unprecedented changes for our collegiate members as most institutions of higher education moved the majority of their classes to an online format. Suddenly Zoom became one of the many virtual platforms that we all quickly learned to navigate! For those of you who have joined me for a Zoom conference, you can attest to my own ability of making a Zoom call enjoyable by creating an almost unending stash of Zoom backgrounds. For me, that has become one of the more enjoyable aspects of having to work online. We have finally moved into the midst of spring. Those up north are welcoming the warmer temperatures, but many of us are excited (and relieved) to have our COVID-19 vaccine on the books. I never thought I would look forward to a shot! Many of our collegiate and alumnae chapters have risen to the challenge yet again this spring by succeeding in a virtual world, finding ways to recruit new members, conduct Fraternity business, make music, and provide service to their community. I congratulate all of the chapters that have hosted their virtual Province Days throughout the Fraternity year. It has been a wonderful experience to join with sisters across the country while sharing our joy of music and our love of SAI with each other. In addition, we continue to honor those who support music by initiating them as Patronesses and Distinguished Members. What a powerful statement we have made to the world — that SAI thrives in the most adverse environment! As you will read in the following pages, many of our SAI members have stepped into leadership positions across the country. We applaud their willingness to take on these new roles, particularly during such unparalleled times. At the national level of SAI, we have appointed Elizabeth "Liz" Palmer as our new Director of Diversity and Inclusion. Liz brings extensive knowledge and experience to this position, and we look forward to her providing her expertise to the Fraternity. Kudos to all who have continued to further the cause of music! Fraternally, Leslie Odom Miller, National President Dear Readers, W elcome back to another issue of PAN PIPES, full of stories of music making, creative collaboration, and personal achievement. I am continuously amazed by the ingenuity, adaptability, and resourcefulness of our members, who keep developing and presenting quality events and projects for us to read about. As the country and world continue to battle the pandemic and its effects, music remains a source of refuge, healing, and joy for many. SAI Philanthropies, Inc. continued to support SAI sisters' efforts to further their professional development and music education over the past year, and a number of articles within share the results of those studies. You will read about neurologic music therapy, adapting Kodály practices to online teaching, improving one's skills as a band director, and a orchestra workshop for non-string playing music educators. One member also encourages educators to actively seek out opportunities to collaborate with your local performing ensembles. On the national scene, we learn about the upcoming 50th An- niversary celebration plans from the Kennedy Center - so much music making is planned! We also catch up with the numerous activities of SAI Honorary Member Marin Alsop and hear about a few of the musi- cal moments at the 2021 Inauguration. Internationally, Jayne Hanlin shares a fascinating peek into one of her past trips to Hamburg. SAI sisters' achievements and endeavors are also front and center in this issue. A number of members were honored for their efforts in music education and leadership of music organizations. We share in the joy of new album releases and award wins, celebrate a sister's 80 years as a member, and hear about an SAI's work to save a historical opera landmark. As always, PAN PIPES welcomes input from our readers. Has there been an interesting presentation at a virtual event you've attended? Are you or a colleague involved in a music related pro- ject or cause?
