Dear Readers, It's summer, summer, summertime! Pre-Pandemic, that would generally mean my family would enjoy lots of time outdoors, a possible road trip, and a ton of LIVE music. The outdoors and vacation are definitely a "go," with hikes and a drive up the PNW coast in our future, but the LIVE music portion is only slowly starting to happen again in many areas. Every time I see a message about a friend or acquaintance getting back to the stage, I throw up a happy cheer from my desk. 2020 and 2021 have been full of challenges for SAIs and musicians in general, both personally and professionally. While recently dealing with some of my own difficulties, I came across a list of inspirational quotes related to overcoming adversity; here are a few of my favorites, that I hope help a few of you as well: "Fresh activity is the only means of overcoming adversity." — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe "Challenges are gifts that force us to search for a new center of gravity. Don't fight them. Just find a new way to stand." — Oprah Winfrey "It's part of life to have obstacles; that's the key to happiness." — Herbie Hancock This issue of PAN PIPES contains a number of great examples of our members overcoming adversity and continuing to create, contribute, and share music. SAIs continued to perform virtually, attended conferences, shared their musical interests on social media, and produced new resources for us to enjoy. Despite closures and distancing, a new museum opened, awards were won, and research trips were conducted. Outstanding! As always, PAN PIPES welcomes input from our readers. Has there been an interesting presentation at an event you've attended? Are you or a colleague involved in a music related project or cause? Do you have specialty knowledge in a field of music or within a unique program to share?
