Summer 2021 14 14 P A N P I P E S American Discoveries Premiere Recordings of Music by Female Composers The Lansdowne Symphony, under the direction of conductor Reuben Blundell*, has released a CD featuring premiere recordings of compositions by three female composers. Titled American Discoveries, it features: City Trees by Priscilla Alden Beach, For a Beautiful Land by Linda Robbins Coleman, and Behemoth, in five short movements by Alexandra Pierce. is release is of particular interest to our sisterhood because it includes the work of one of our Member Laureates, Linda Robbins Coleman. Ms. Robbins Coleman initiated with Pi chapter and later joined the Des Moines Alumnae chapter. She was kind enough to share a bit about her experiences with SAI and her thoughts about For a Beautiful Land. "...My history with SAI goes back to my college days. I joined Pi chapter at Drake University, and once I graduated from Drake, I became a member of the Des Moines Alumnae chapter. I'm not very good about going to meetings, but I have great affection for SAI and keep strong ties to many members. I was deeply moved to be awarded Member Laureate by the Des Moines Alumnae Chapter in 1999. I have tried my best to live up to that honor and sing the praises of SAI whenever I participate in residencies and performances throughout the country. In 2011, I was invited to be one of the judges for the triennial IAMA competition. In addition to the responsibilities involving the IAMA submissions, I was also commissioned to create a new work to be premiered at the SAI National Convention in 2012. Images Dangereuses was the result. I was thrilled to attend the convention in Atlanta, provide one of the keynote speeches ("I Will Meet You In e Music"), and enjoy the premiere of my piano quintet. e chance to meet so many SAIs and enjoy all the musical offerings was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It was magical! Over the years I have deeply appreciated my SAI membership. In 2019 I was invited to participate in the Michigan Philharmonic concert "A Celebration of Courage" for the 100th Anniversary of Veterans Day. ey brought me in for a guest residency and performed my symphonic poem, Elegy for the Greatest Generation.
