Summer 2021 22 22 P A N P I P E S a $10,000 grant which funded archival research at the Fondo Luigi Dallapiccola at the Archivio Contemporaneo Bonsanti in Florence, Italy and the Dallapiccola/Dwight Collection at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Along with her continuing research on Dallapiccola, Clarke is interested in narratives of gender, nature, and mortality in Amy Beach's piano music. Another research focus is inclusivity and diversity in music theory pedagogy. Her classroom initiative "Female Composer Friday" integrates the routine of a Friday analysis day in theory class with an effort to elevate the voices of women composers past and present. Clarke has been invited to present her research at international and national conferences, including the American Musicological Society (AMS); the Music by Women Conference at the Mississippi University for Women; the American Women Pianist-Composers Conference at the University of New Hampshire; and the Women in the Creative Arts Conference at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. Clarke's music has also been performed internationally, with performances at Felix Meritis Hall in Amsterdam, the Nordic Historical Keyboard Festival in Kuopio, Finland, the Schola Cantorum in Paris, France, and other prestigious venues. Her music has also been featured at various conferences and festivals, including the International Trombone Festival, the International Women's Brass Conference, and the Society of Composers Region III Conference. Lastly, Clarke is board member of composition for the College Music Society (2018 - 2020), president of the Mid-Atlantic chapter of the American Musicological Society, Editorial Board Member for Career Development for the CMS Symposium, and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Kappa Lambda societies. D R . V E R N O N H O WA R D Dr. Vernon Howard was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Sigma Gamma Chapter at the University of Tulsa in April. Professor Howard is an Applied Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Tulsa, where he served as Director of the School of Music from 2013-2020. He holds both Master's and Bachelor's of Music Education degrees from the University of Tulsa. He has also been Director of Instrumental Music for the Holland Hall School, instructing classroom studies for grades 5 through 12 in music history, jazz ensemble, band, and chamber orchestra. Howard directed the summer jazz studies program at the Interlochen Center for the Arts for 34 years. He has a performance history of over 50 years on trombone and electric bass with orchestral, jazz, and commercial music ensembles, including the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, Interlochen Festival Orchestra, and the Oklahoma Sinfonia Big Band. He has performed as a Trombonist on concert and cabaret performances with Doc Severinsen, Frank Rosolino, Billy Eckstein, B.B. King, the Temptations, Mel Tormé, and Ellis Marsalis, to name a few. Professor Howard was presented with the Outstanding University Jazz Educators Award by the Oklahoma Music Educators Association at the O.M.E.A. State Convention in 2010. He is involved in numerous professional organizations and serves on the boards of the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra and the American Federation of Musicians, Local 94. Howard has been active in a number of music organizations as a member, clinician, and adjudicator, such as the National Association for Music Education, Oklahoma Music Educators Association, Oklahoma Jazz Educators Association, and the College Music Society. D R . M AT T H E W J O R DA N Dr. Matthew Jordan was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the eta Beta Chapter at Jacksonville State University in April. Dr. Jordan is currently the Visiting Assistant Professor of Percussion at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. He is also currently the front ensemble arranger for Music City Mystique, the Music Coordinator and Sound Designer for the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps, and Music Advisor for the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps. Prior to starting at JSU, Dr. Jordan was the Concert Percussion Marketing Manager for Pearl Corporation/ Adams Musical Instruments, and Assistant Director of Bands/Instructor of Percussion at Middle Tennessee State University. Dr. Jordan has worked as a percussion instructor and arranger with a number of DCI and WGI groups, including the Phantom Regiment (2011-2014), Carolina Crown (2015), and Spirit of Atlanta (2007-2010, 2018). He is also very involved at the scholastic level as an arranger for indoor drumlines and marching bands, having written for groups such as Max Percussion (Bangkok, ailand), Bangkok Society Drumline, Franklin High School, Science Hill High School, McGavock High School, Dobyns-Bennett High School, and Father Ryan High School, among others. As a performer, Dr. Jordan plays regularly with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and has also performed with Intersection Contemporary Music Ensemble, Keith Brion's New Sousa Band, Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, San Angelo Symphony, Eastern Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tennessee Philharmonic. While at North Texas, Dr. Jordan performed with the world- renowned UNT Wind Symphony, as well as the One o'Clock and Two o'Clock Lab Bands. He was the timpanist of e Cavaliers (2003-04) and Music City Mystique (2000-05) and in 2004, he received 1st place in both the DCI and PAS Timpani Individuals competitions. Dr. Jordan also travels abroad frequently, having performed in Mexico, China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, and Japan. In the summer of 2010 he traveled to Ghana in West Africa to study Ewe drumming. He completed the Doctor of Music degree from Florida State University, a Master's Degree from the University of North Texas, and a Bachelor's Degree from Middle Tennessee State University. Dr. Jordan is a proud artist and clinician for Pearl/Adams instruments, Innovative Percussion sticks and mallets, Evans Drumheads, and Zildjian Cymbals. D R . R A C H E L PA R K Dr. Rachel Park was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the eta Beta Chapter at Jacksonville State University in April. Dr. Park is a professor for the David L. Walters Department of Music at Jacksonville State University (JSU), where teaches piano lessons and piano class. She has performed not only throughout the United States, but throughout the world.
