24 Spring 2022 • sai-national.org A Wld of Music teaching career. e Zielinskis never had children. He corresponded with Edith until 1890, giving advice about his philosophy of music and teaching music. I obtained a copy of two years of this correspondence, which was typed by Edward A. Symans — and easier to read than original handwritten letters — from the archives of the Grand Rapids History Center of the Grand Rapids Public Library. In these letters Zielinski emphasized Edith's great promise as a pianist. Among additional matters he writes about — musical and otherwise — are the virtue of punctuality, the $12 he spent to move two Steinway pianos for his musical soiree, and two sea novels he recommends: e Pirate by Sir Walter Scott and e Wing-and-Wing by James Fenimore Cooper. A prolific author, he wrote a number of interesting articles for e Etude, a popular music magazine published between 1883-1957. For example, "Usefulness of Some Recent Composition" appeared in the July 1877 issue, and a two-part article from 1910 was about great Italian masters of the piano. He also penned the eight-page article "Russian Hunting Music" in e Musical Quarterly of January 1917. Jaroslaw de Zielinski concludes his 1871 document: "As music is an art, the scholar must bear in mind the fact that all love and understanding must flow from the heart, if it is to fructify into life." is is still musical productivity at its best! Composers Featured in New Releases Two books featuring SAI Composers Bureau members were recently released by the University of Illinois Press. Tania León's Stride: A Polyrhythmic Life, by Alejandro L. Madrid, looks at the life and works of composer, educator, and conductor Tania León. León is an SAI National Arts Associate, as well as a member of the SAI Composers Bureau, and she served as an IAMA Composer/Judge for the 2015 Composition Competition. Stride is also the name of her 2021 Pulitzer Prize winning orchestral piece, which features brass and rhythmic motifs that incorporate Black music traditions from the US and the Caribbean. The second book is Interviews with American Composers: Barney Childs in Conversation, edited by Virginia Anderson. The late Dr. Barney Childs, an SAI Friend of the Arts, recorded conversations and interviews with fellow composers in 1972-73, including William Albright, Sydney Hodkinson, and Christian Wolff, among others. Anderson assembled the conversations and included contextual essays before each by composers, critics, musicologists, and former students.
