30 Summer 2022 • sai-national.org Crawley Crawley Coppenbarger Coppenbarger has performed with the Ocala Symphony Orchestra, the Baton Rouge Symphony, and the Louisiana Sinfonietta. In addition, she performs regularly with the professional saxophone chamber ensemble, Quartetto Obrigado, and with Minos the Saint, an eclectic chamber-folk ensemble with Cajun and Zydeco influence with elements from the Eastern European, Latin, and jazz traditions. Dr. Assad is a Selmer Paris Performing Artist for Conn-Selmer, Inc. and an Artist-Clinician for Vandoren. Casey Coppenbarger Casey Coppenbarger was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Asheville Alumnae Chapter in May. Mr. Coppenbarger received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI, and his Master of Music from the University of Massachusetts in Lowell, MA, both in trumpet performance. While a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts, he served as Assistant Conductor of the University Concert Band, as Director of the University Instrumental Ensemble and Trumpet Ensemble, and as first trumpet of the Graduate Brass Quintet. He has maintained a private studio in Asheville, NC, since 1984, and his most recent college teaching position was at the University of North Carolina in Asheville, where he taught Applied Trumpet/French Horn, directed the Brass Ensemble, and served as Director of Athletic Bands. Mr. Coppenbarger is well-known throughout Western North Carolina for his participation in ensembles of all sizes. He has played in the Looking Glass Brass, Appalachian Brass, Asheville Symphony Orchestra, Blue Ridge Orchestra, and is currently the Conductor/Artistic Director of the Smoky Mountain Brass Band. When he played with the Asheville Symphony, he also served as their Performer/Program Performance developer, and as such created a new public school Docent program for the Symphony Guild. Mr. Coppenbarger's mother, Lavonne, is an SAI Alumna (Alpha Kappa - Pittsburg State University). Dr. Kaylina Madison Crawley Dr. Kaylina Madison Crawley was initiated as an Honorary Member by the Kappa Iota Chapter at Tennessee State University in May. Dr. Crawley recently received her doctorate in musicology at the University of Kentucky, where her dissertation is titled "John Wesley Work III: Arranger, Performer, and Historian of African American Traditional Music." She is originally from Vicksburg, MS. She graduated with a Master of Arts Degree from Middle Tennessee State University and summa cum laude from Fisk University with a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. She was a UNCF/Mellon Undergraduate Fellow, and her research topic was "Native Music: Recognizing the School of African-American Piano Composition during the 1940s." Her research was presented at the William Grant Still Conference in November 2009, following her co-presentation at the 2009 Tennessee Music Teachers Association State Conference in a session titled "Crossing the Stream: Teaching the Piano Music of African- American Composers." Dr. Crawley presented "Black Representation in the Emperor Jones" at the American Musicological Society South Central Chapter Conference in 2016 and has written an article for the Journal of American Rootwork titled "Oh What Joy to Find em Singing: Oral Traditions in the Bethesda Original Church of God or Sanctified Church" as well as a media review on "e Spirituals Database," compiled by Randye Jones, in the Fall 2016 SAM Bulletin. She currently serves as the Community Academy of Music and Arts director (CAMA) at Tennessee State University, as well as the treasurer of the Tennessee State University chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda music honor society, and she teaches Music Appreciation, Proficiency Piano, and Applied Piano courses. She is also a member of the American Musicological Society, the Society of American Music, and Delta Sigma eta Sorority, Inc. She is married to Randy Crawley, Jr. of Nashville, TN. Dr. Gary Dobbins Dr. Gary Dobbins was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Dallas Alumnae Chapter in April. Dr. Dobbins has been an active music educator and performer for over fiy years. His background consists of a diverse teaching career with positions ranging from elementary to university level. Previous teaching assignments include Instrumental Music in the Dallas Independent School District (ISD), Orchestra Director and Area Coordinator for the Richardson ISD, Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and an Instructor in Music at Texas State University. Dr. Dobbins holds degrees in Music Education, Trumpet Performance, and Conducting from the University of North Texas, Michigan State University, and the University of Northern Colorado. He has participated with the Lansing, Grand Rapids, Acadian, and Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestras. He performed with the Dallas Winds for 25 years and participated in a series of 15 CDs with the Reference Recording label. Along with his wife, Judy, he has hosted meetings for SAI and performed at chapter meetings and retirement homes. Dr. Mark Eutsler Dr. Mark Eutsler was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Iota Eta Chapter at Indiana State University in May. Dr. Eutsler has been serving his community of Terre Haute and been chair of several organizations, including chair at the Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana Business Advisory Committee, past vice president and president- elect of the Frankfort Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Ouiatenon Club at Wabash College, past president of Metro Ministries, past chair of the Indiana Occupational Safety Standards Commission, and past chair of the Serve Indiana Commission.
