sai-national.org • Fall 2022 9 D uring Friday morning's General Session Dr. Lori Ardovino provided the musicale and performed her solo clarinet composition, Eloquence II. "Eloquence II was composed in 2010 as the second in a series of solo works for various orchestral instruments," she said. "The work is in ABA' form, with a free and flowing A section that emphasizes intervals centered around seconds and sevenths. The style is expressive, focusing on tone color and lyricism. The B section calls for more motion and the use of resonance trills for added coloristic effect. Demanding technical passages accompany these timbral effects. The final A' brings back the free flowing intervallic connection with interruption of percussive interjections and extreme dynamics." Dr. Ardovino is an Artist/Clinician with Conn-Selmer Company, D'Addario Woodwinds and is a Fulbright Specialist. Currently, she is Professor Music at the University of Montevallo where she teaches clarinet, saxophone and woodwind methods and ensembles. An SAI Composers Bureau member, she is the faculty advisor for the Mu Eta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, is the Alabama State Chair for the International Clarinet Association and Music Editor for the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors. She performs with the LeBaron Trio, the Meàllo Trio, the Vinna Trio and the Cahaba Saxophone Quartet. S oprano Michelle Fegeas, DMA, a member of the Washington, DC Alumnae Chapter, performed a song cycle by SAI Composers Bureau member Lori Laitman during Friday afternoon's general session. The work, Orange Afternoon Lover, consists of three parts: Against Still Life; I Was Reading A Scientific Article; I Am Sitting on the Edge. Fegeas had this to say about the piece: "I performed this cycle as part of my dissertation lecture recital at George Mason University. I was looking at several songs from a project [The Howard Hanson Fund of The Eastman School and The College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University] commissioned by soprano Eileen Strempel (also an SAI) and pianist Sylvie Beaudette. Every composer involved was a woman, and all of the pieces set to music the poetry of Margaret Atwood, who also wrote the famous novel The Handmaid's Tale. I analyzed the songs from a feminist perspective." 2022 Natial Cvention
