S i g m a A l p h a I o t a A n n u a l F r at e r n i t y Awa r d s FALL 2022 30 K ATH ERI N E BEC KER N ATI O N A L CO LLEG I ATE C H A PTER AC H I E V E M ENT AWA RD ALPHA U n i v e r s i t y o f M i c h i g a n , A l p h a A , R e g i o n V I I The Katherine Becker National Collegiate Chapter Achievement Award is given annually to a chapter whose officers and members have achieved distinction in fulfilling the National Objectives while completing all of the chapter's local and national obligations. e recipient of this award for the 2021-2022 Fraternity year was Alpha Chapter at the University of Michigan. Alpha continued to thrive in the face of the pandemic and accomplished many great things this past year. ey recruited 17 new members using a variety of recruitment events, from getting to know sisters, to craing, to game nights, to a COVID-safe brunch. e chapter also planned a successful Women Composers Concert in the community. Performers included sisters and other women in the School of Music, eater, and Dance. Members caroled at a local assisted living facility with the Ann Arbor Alumnae Chapter. eir Education and Community Engagement Committee recorded and presented a panel on auditioning and getting into music school geared towards high school students. is chapter committee also planned an event where sisters went to a local school and presented about music to elementary music classes on three separate occasions. e chapter's Professional Development Committee brought in presenters for the chapter and school of music. eir Faculty Advisor presented a workshop on resume writing, and the chapter invited Dr. Maria Castillo, co-founder of the Latin American Music Initiative, to give a virtual lecture over Zoom. As a thank you, the chapter donated to this initiative. Alpha's biggest service project was helping the Detroit Harmony Initiative collect instruments as part of their musical instrument drive. e chapter collected over 75 instruments in the school of music and assisted with the collection of more instruments in East Lansing, MI prior to the University of Michigan vs. Michigan State University football game. Members of the chapter were recognized during the game for their efforts.
