M O R R I S M E M O R I A L AWA R D FO R STR I N G S O R H A R P EMILY STONE S i g m a T h e t a , E a s t m a n S c h o o l o f M u s i c , E t a A , R e g i o n V I I I G R A D UATE P ERFO R M A N C E AWA RDS TRI EN N I A L AWA RDS H arpist Emily Stone, an SAI Graduate Performance Award recipient, performed the prelude music for ursday evening's Convention Eve Concert and Ritual Ceremony. e program included Franz Liszt's Un sospiro, Germaine Tailleferre's "Allegretto" from the Sonate pour Harpe, and Manuel de Falla's "Spanish Dance No. 1" from La Vida Breve. Stone distinguishes herself as an award-winning ensemble, chamber, and solo musician based in Chicago, IL. An alumna of the Eastman School of Music, Ms. Stone earned her B.M. degrees in Harp Performance and Music Education with a minor in French and Performer's Certificate. She is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in Harp Performance at Northwestern University. Ms. Stone frequently performs as an extra musician with the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Recently, she performed with Josh Groban on his Harmony Tour (2022). She has performed with major ensembles such as the New Earth Ensemble in Chicago, IL, the Northshore Concert Band in Evanston, IL, St. Andrew's Chamber Orchestra in Rochester, NY, the Ithaca College Wind Ensemble in Ithaca, NY, and the Cordancia Chamber Orchestra in Rochester, NY. At Northwestern University, she serves as the rotating principal harpist of the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra and the principal harpist of the Northwestern University Contemporary Music Ensemble. During the Contemporary Music Ensemble's 2021-2022 season, she performed at the 2021 Ear Taxi Festival in Chicago, IL, on Marcos Balter's Meltdown Upshot and performed on the world premiere of Karen Bao's Azure Moon. She also serves as the principal harpist for Northwestern Opera eatre and joined them in their 2021- 2022 season in their production of Jake Heggie's If I Were You. As an avid chamber musician and advocate of new music, she performed with the OSSIA New Music Ensemble in Rochester, NY in their 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons and was recently featured on works such as Anthony Green's Refraction Aberrance and Julie Herndon's I Can Take. She was also a featured artist on multiple recordings with this group. Her most recent new music engagement included a performance with the New Earth Ensemble at the inaugural EcoVoice Festival in Chicago, IL (2022) of Sarah Kirkland Snider's Mass for the Endangered. In addition to performance, Ms. Stone is a distinguished and passionate pedagogue. She works with harp students ranging from beginner to collegiate study on both pedal and lever harp. In 2021, she earned her New York State Teaching Licensure in Pre-K-12 Music and has taught both elementary and high school string orchestra in the Webster School District and the Rochester City School District in upstate New York. In 2022, she was named the First Prize Winner of Sigma Alpha Iota's Dorothy E. Morris Memorial Award. In 2022 and 2020, she was a finalist in the American Harp Society's Anne Adams Awards. Her major teachers include Marguerite Lynn Williams, Kathleen Bride, and Ina Zdorovetchi.
