Wykes St.Louis, MO Alumna Sarah Groteluschen, an initiate of Epsilon Phi, passed away unexpectedly from an aortic aneurysm in November of 2020. With her love of music education in mind, her parents, David and Janelle Groteluschen, have recently established a memorial scholarship in her honor at her alma mater, Northwest Missouri State University. The Sarah Groteluschen Memorial Music Scholarship, established with contributions from her parents and the Missouri State Teachers Retirement Fund, consists of a $2,000 award to be given to a Northwest music education student once per year. Recipients will be full-time Northwest students involved in an instrumental music performing group, with a preference for woodwind instruments, and have a grade-point average of 3.25 or higher. After graduating, Sarah went on to work as a music teacher at the West Nodaway R-I school district. She was president of the Northwest Alumni Association's Band Alumni Chapter. She was also involved in the National Association for Music Education and the Missouri Music Educators Association. A dedicated music teacher and learner, Sarah had received an SAI Professional Development Education Grant in 2019 to attend training on conversational solfege and wrote to SAI Philanthropies, Inc. about her experience in early 2020: "Thank you to Sigma Alpha Iota for selecting me to be a recipient of the Professional Development Grant. It allowed me to attend the Conversational Solfege 1 and 2 certification class in Golden Valley, Minnesota…Conversational Solfege Levels 1 and 2 promote and teach music literacy and is geared to students from second to eighth grade. Conversational Solfege Upper Levels continues these skills into the development of advanced skills that are often used in performance ensembles…This was a great week spent with other teachers and learning from a master teacher in studying how to be the best teachers that we can be…" Sister's Memorial Scholarship Established
