MICHAEL HACKETT Dr. Michael Hackett was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Madison Alumnae Chapter on behalf of the SAI Philanthropies, Inc. Board in December. Dr. Hackett, a jazz trumpeter, is Assistant Professor of Jazz and Commercial Music at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He was previously Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Studies at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. An active performer, clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Hackett has served as an adjudicator for the jazz divisions of both the International Trumpet Guild and The National Trumpet Competition. For the last five summer seasons, he has served on the faculty of the Yellowstone Jazz camps in Wyoming. Dr. Hackett has performed extensively with touring entertainers and pops orchestras across the country backing up artists such as Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, and Perry Como. His playing has been featured in many national television and radio commercials, the movie sound track to "The Aviator," and many commercially available recordings, including those with Scott Whitfield's Jazz Orchestra East, three recordings with The Buselli/Wallarab Jazz Orchestra, and "Basically Baker: the Music of David Baker." Michael Hackett's first solo recording entitled "Circles" was released on the Summit Records label in 2005. In spring of 2013, Summit Records released his most recent recording entitled "New Point of View." Dr. Hackett received his DM Brass Pedagogy from the prestigious Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and well as a BM and MM in Jazz studies from the same. His principal teachers include trumpet studies with William Adam and John Rommel, and jazz studies with internationally renowned Distinguished Professor of Jazz Studies at Indiana, David Baker. Dr. Hackett plays on a Conn Vintage 1 Bflat trumpet and flugelhorn, and Bach Stradivarius C and Eflat trumpets. He is the husband of Heidi Frankson, former Chairman of SAI Philanthropies, Inc. Dr. Shelby R. Chipman Dr. Shelby R. Chipman was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Theta Nu Chapter at Florida A & M University (FAMU) in November. Dr. Chipman currently serves as the Director of Bands and as a Professor of Music at FAMU and has served in this position since 2016. His responsibilities in the Department of Music include teaching Instrumental Music Education, conducting, and assisting with student recitals and student teachers. Additionally, he conducts the Marching & Pep Bands, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and String Ensemble. He received his Bachelor of Science degrees in Computer Science and Music Education from Florida A&M University, where he was a conducting student of Dr. William P. Foster and Dr. Julian E. White. Dr. Chipman completed his master's degree in music education at the University of Illinois, and received his Ph.D. in music education from the Florida State University (FSU) College of Music, where he studied with Dr. Bentley Shellahamer. Prior to his appointment at FAMU, he taught music in the Miami-Dade County Public School system for 10 years. His band program at Miami Central High School developed into one of the finest band programs in the country. As much a teacher as a musician,, Dr. Chipman was named Teacher of the Year during the 1993-94 school year. Under his leadership the Rocket Marching band performed in the 1993, 1995, and 1997 King Orange Jamboree Parades, 1993 Heritage Festival (New Orleans), 1990-96 FAMU's Homecoming Festivals (Tallahassee, Fla.), 1992-97 MLK Parades & Festival (St. Petersburg, Fla.), 1997 Macy's Day Parade (New York City), and numerous other marching events. The Miami Central High School Symphonic Band performed at the prestigious Bands of America National Concert Festival in Indianapolis, IN. Dr. Chipman is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi Band Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, National Association for Music Education (NAfME), Florida Music Education Association (FMEA), Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA), College Band Directors National Conference (CBDNA), FMEA Multicultural Network, and Bethel AME Church (Tallahassee). In 2021, Dr. Chipman was elected as President and Chair of Budget and Finance Development for the Florida Music Education Association (FMEA). In addition to his service with FMEA, Dr. Chipman is currently a member of the Adjudication Committee for the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA)and is an active adjudicator and clinician throughout the southeastern US. Dr. Chipman is a firm believer that overcoming obstacles through faith, guidance, and love is possible. He is hardworking, dedicated, and above all, humble. Dr. Matthew Darling Dr. Matthew Darling was initiated as a Friend of the Arts by the Kappa Psi Chapter at California State University, Fresno in December. Dr. Darling is the current chair of the Department of Music at California State University, Fresno and the former faculty advisor for the Kappa Psi Chapter; he taught and headed the percussion area at Fresno State since 1991, and has been Chair of the Department of Music since Fall 2016.
