D ear Readers, Beyond the basic Mission of Sigma Alpha Iota, which is to encourage, nurture, and support the art of music, the Fraternity also has a seven part Vision for the organization's recognition within the music world. A number of the articles in this issue of PAN PIPES relate to aspects of the first two Vision statements: "Supports and encourages women musicians of all ages, races, and nationalities" and "Supports and promotes successful and innovative educational programs in music for all stages of life." For the first, Alumna Dr. Evangeline Rimbach reminisces on her lifetime of music making, and SAI Patroness Angelica Brooks shares information about her non-profit's first conference on the recruitment and retention of music educators of color. We report on Alumna Sheryl Crow's induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and our book reviewer, Kathi Bower Peterson, offers up two very interesting books for your consideration: one on the life of Russian pianist Maria Yudina and the other on the Brubecks' anti-segregation musical The Real Ambassadors. I also encourage you to read about and get to know our six Fraternity Directors, who lead the way in developing resources and programs for our chapters and members. For the second Vision item pertaining to music education we explore the endeavors of a number of chapters at this year's state music education conferences, learn about successful alumnae and collegiate educational efforts for their members and communities, and hear from accordion expert Mary Anne Covone about the past, present, and future of her beloved instrument. Lastly, you can take a musical tour of two European destinations — Austria's Mozart Week and Belgium's Musical Instrument Museum — to learn more from afar. In our next issue we'll be highlighting the work of the various projects of SAI Philanthropies, Inc. and offering up a number of other musical articles by our members.
