32 Spring 2023 • sai-national.org IAWM SEARCH FOR NEW MUSIC COMPETITION The International Alliance for Women in Music holds an annual composition competition for women-identified composers that are current members of IAWM. The 2023 Search for New Music Competition opened on March 1st. This international competition includes several prize categories ranging from chamber and orchestral works to electroacoustic media, improvisation, and sound installation. Each prize has its own monetary award. Membership in IAWM is required to enter, but contestants may join at the time of entry. Entries are anonymous. The SNM committee administers the competition, receives entries, selects judges, and publicizes the contest guidelines and the list of winners. WEBSITE: bit.ly/saiphilsga Otunities THE MARGARET BLACKBURN COMPOSITION COMPETITION The Margaret Blackburn Composition Competition began in 1997. Margaret Blackburn was a founding member of the Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter in 1935. When she passed away in 1996, she bequeathed $10,000 to SAI, to be used for a composition competition scholarship. A $1000 grand prize will be awarded to the female student composer who submits the winning musical composition in the 2023 Biennial Blackburn Memorial Composition Competition. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college, university or graduate music program for the 2022-23 academic year. Compositions should be for a small ensemble of no less than two instruments, which may include voice and no more than twelve instruments including voice. Works for instruments and electronic sounds, digital media, CD, interactive compositions or works for electronic sounds alone can be included. No published scores will be accepted. By submitting an application you acknowledge that your piece may be performed in full at a Sigma Alpha Iota event.
