Philanthropies Awards 2024 SIGMA ALPHA IOTA PAN PIPES FALL 2024 26 Izabella Gozzo Sigma Theta, Eastman School of Music, Eta A, Region VIII My experience at Chicago Summer Opera was positive and very enjoyable. For three and a half weeks I rehearsed and had coachings with Curtis Serafin, who conducted Dido and Aeneas. From the very first rehearsal we jumped into the small details of the score and analyzed the intricacies of each character in the opera. We had rehearsals for around six hours a day, and because the opera was double cast I had the opportunity to watch and learn from my colleagues. Learning the role of the First Witch was very fun, and it was amusing to put my own twist into my "witch-sona." I learned that I have a very good witch laugh! Alongside opera rehearsals I participated in a masterclass, had coachings with two amazing coaches, and had weekly lessons with Alexandra Lobianco. I learned new concepts to help aid my technique in my lessons, and Ms. Lobianco pointed out some areas of performing that I should think about in a different way. I enjoyed working with her so much that I traveled to her home studio on an off day for an extra lesson. Another highlight was the amazing location and supportive colleagues I was introduced to. The program was held at Roosevelt University in the South Loop of Chicago. Every classroom had a view of Lake Michigan, which made the learning environment very calming and peaceful. Every person I met was so encouraging and kind. I met many of my fellow Sigma Alpha Iota sisters, which was a delight! I learned a lot about different cultures and music schooling in different countries, since the students in the program were from all over the world. Overall, Chicago Summer Opera was a space where I played around with my character choices, learned more about my vocal technique, and connected with so many amazing colleagues. I am so grateful to have spent my summer at this program. SUMMER MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP Sarah McHan Gamma Theta, Georgia Southern University, Tau C, Region VI Thank you so much for making my experience at the Harrower Summer Opera Workshop possible through the SAI summer music scholarship! I had an amazing time at this program singing the role of Amy March in Mark Adamo's opera Little Women. It was so fun to meet conductors, directors, and fellow singers from across the country. There were several SAI sisters at Harrower, including the stage director for Little Women! I will forever cherish the memories I made at this program, and I am immensely grateful for the financial support from SAI Philanthropies!
