2 Summer 2025 • sai-national.org D ear Members of Sigma Alpha Iota, It's hard to believe we've reached the end of another triennium. It seems like only yesterday we gathered in Greensboro, North Carolina, to celebrate our 50th National Convention. I recently came across photos from that memorable event— many of us in masks, yet undeterred by the global pandemic—united in our commitment to one another and to the music that binds us together. Reflecting on those moments has only heightened my excitement for the upcoming 51st National Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Our National Conventions are truly distinctive experiences—where tradition meets progression. Each of us holds dear certain elements that have become hallmarks of the Convention experience over time. For some, it's the structured deliberations of policy and procedure as we address the business of our Fraternity on a national scale. For others, it's the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and forge new relationships. Many are moved by our ritual ceremonies, which take on new meaning and grandeur in this setting. And of course, for many of us, the musical performances, whether singing from our Fraternity songbook or listening to accomplished musicians, remain the heart of the experience. For me, it's not any single aspect, but the collective experience—the way each piece comes together to create something truly extraordinary. What makes it even more special is that each of us walks away with a different picture, a unique "puzzle" of memories and moments. Yet through all our individual experiences, one constant thread remains: music. I look forward to seeing you in Minneapolis and adding your piece to my Convention puzzle. This summer issue of PAN PIPES highlights several key aspects of our 2025 National Convention. One notable feature is the diverse lineup of workshop sessions, offering a wide range of topics facilitated by members of our organization and invited guests. We encourage you to attend as many sessions as possible to take full advantage of the learning and networking opportunities. Consider coordinating with fellow attendees to attend different workshops during each session. Afterwards, you can exchange notes and insights. It's a great way to enrich the experience and ensure everyone benefits from the full range of offerings. This issue also features an engaging profile of Rachel Barton Pine, who will be performing at the Philanthropies Benefit Concert. I highly recommend visiting her website and exploring her music in advance of the event. Additionally, this issue includes a tribute to SAI Honorary Member Dolly Parton at the Country Music Hall of Fame, as well as a creative exploration of mariachi music. You'll also find an inspirational piece by SAI Friend of the Arts Dr. Jeffrey Doebler, who shares his insights on music education in action. Other topics of interest include the preservation of silent film heritage and the growing field of NICU music therapy. And, of course, no issue of PAN PIPES would be complete without a musical journey around the world with Jayne Hanlin—this time aboard a yellow submarine! As I wrap up this term as National President, I want to express a heartfelt "thank you" to all of you. One of my primary goals in this role was to foster a leadership style that is transparent, inclusive, and forward-thinking. While some efforts took more than one try, I have consistently strived to maintain open and honest communication as we worked together to help our fraternity thrive in a world that often presents obstacles. I encourage you to continue asking the challenging questions and seeking common ground upon which we can build an even stronger foundation. To my amazing colleagues on the National Executive Board, it has been a genuine privilege to work alongside each of you throughout this triennium. Your dedication, honest dialogue, unwavering support, and friendship have made our shared work both impactful and inspiring. I'm proud of what we've accomplished together and look forward to all that lies ahead for our continued service to the Fraternity.
