24 Fall 2025 • sai-national.org By Arolue Prater A Supercentenarian: someone who lives to be 110 years old or older. There are an estimated 300 to 450 supercentenarians worldwide. These numbers are based on experts from the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). Validation from lists maintained by this group indicate the survival rate of people reaching the age of 110 is estimated to be between 0.15% and 0.25%, highlighting how uncommon it is to reach this age. Peggy Cobb, a member of the Atlanta Alumnae Chapter, has achieved this incredible and amazing milestone. Another SAI member, Lela Putney, lived to the age of 108 in 2013. At that time, she was the oldest living SAI member. Lela now has another partner to share this distinguished honor. Celebrating this unbelievable and remarkable age in her Sandy Springs, Georgia retirement community on May 23, Peggy was regaled in true fashion with a grand birthday celebration of popcorn, champagne, various cakes, live music venues, and several food stations. Family members, friends, and residents living in the Hammond Glen facility attended the festive occasion, and local television broadcasters interviewed the honoree. The city of Sandy Springs also presented Peggy with a special proclamation signed by the mayor. She was speechless and overwhelmed by all the festivities planned in her honor, and she thanked the hundreds who came for being a part of her life. A close friend, Melanie Zeck, who works at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, also attended. Using various local tea bag cloth pieces from a recent trip to Tanzania, this long-time and cherished friend made a banner commemorating the 110th birthday year. During the Atlanta Alumnae members' visit in Peggy's apartment, a week after the birthday celebration, she was demure and shunned requests to tell about herself and what various projects she was involved with. Instead, she questioned the alumnae members to know about their lives and activities since we had last visited. During the conversations, it was remarkable that Peggy remembered long ago chapter instances. Peter, one of her sons who frequently visits from California, spoke of the birthday celebration, showed the Proclamation Certificate, and told of the various visits from other friends and organizations (Delta Kappa Gamma and P.E.O.) that Peggy is a member of. When Peggy Vanstrom Cobb was born in 1915—one of six siblings, and the fourth of five daughters—her parents named her Blanche Eloise after her mother's best friend. It was later discovered that there was no county registration listed by that name, only "No Name Female." Peggy dropped this parental-given name and Member Spotlight SAI's Supercentenarian: SAI's Supercentenarian: Peggy Cobb Peggy Cobb Peter Cobb, Melanie Zeck, friend, Bill Cobb Peter Cobb, Melanie Zeck, friend, Bill Cobb and Peggy Cobb. and Peggy Cobb.
