30 Spring 2026 • sai-national.org Excerpts from Brandi Neal's workshop at the 2025 SAI National Convention What is Impostor Syndrome? Impostor syndrome is defined as a psychological pattern where an individual doubts their skills, talents, or accomplishments, and fears being exposed as a "fraud." Its root causes include past traumatic experiences, perfectionism, comparison culture, external validating focus, and high-achieving environments. The 2025 Natial Cvention TUNING OUT THE DOUBT: Overcoming Impostor Syndrome Brandi Neal (front) with Brandi Neal (front) with workshop attendees at workshop attendees at National Convention National Convention Remember! • Impostor syndrome may whisper that you're not enough, but preparation, community, and self-belief speak louder. • You have every right to take up space on the stage and share your artistry with the world. • Confidence is a practice, not a personality trait—one built through reflection, repetition, and resilience. • You are not alone! You are not an impostor, and your voice matters. How to Overcome 1. Prepare with purpose – preparation builds confidence, reduces anxiety, and improves performance outcomes. 2. Reframe negative self-talk – Replace "I'm not good enough" with "I'm still learning, and making progress." 3. Affirm your achievements – Naming your accomplishments helps solidify a confident performer identity. 4. Community connection – Talking with others reduces shame and builds support. 5. Celebrate and own your growth – Self-kindness counters perfectionism and burnout. Brandi Neal is chartering president of the South Atlanta Alumnae Chapter. She teaches piano and chorus for the Henry County School District, where she was named Teacher of the Year in 2024. Brandi can be found at www.thebrandineal.com.
