Hanlin V incenzo Bellini (1801–1835)—like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Carl Maria von Weber, Franz Schubert, and Felix Mendelssohn—died in his thirties. His music, like theirs, has been immortalized. In 1923, King Victor Emmanuel of Italy signed an act for Bellini's birth house to become a national monument, but it took seven years— until May 1930—to inaugurate the Bellini Museum in Catania, Sicily. It is located on the site of the former Palazzo Gravina-Cruyllas, which was rebuilt in the eighteenth century after being destroyed by an earthquake in 1693. Arriving from Taormina at the Catania Central Train Station, I walked twenty minutes to the museum on St. Francis of Assisi Plaza. Serendipitously, two Argentinians helped me navigate the route. A large museum sign is flanked by an Italian flag and a Catanian flag above an arched entrance leading into a courtyard. The original museum in the birth house is to the left; the newer museum is to the right. My visit on November 2 closely coincided with Bellini's birth date during the early morning hours of 1801, in a small alcove of the modest residence where he and his family lived for the next three years before moving. Donated by family members, heirs, and private individuals, the museum collection contains over a hundred items.
