sai-national.org • Summer 2026 13 In these classes, we sing, play drums and xylophones, dance with scarves, and explore the joy of music. But what truly sets these classes apart is the Suzuki philosophy: the belief in nurturing the whole child and fostering strong character development. Each activity not only teaches a musical skill, but also offers parents and teachers the chance to model and nurture virtues like patience, sharing, respect, cooperation, and teamwork. Over the years, countless touching moments have reminded me of the profound impact of this work: tiny children sharing board books from the basket, a child's radiant smile when they take their first independent steps to march in our circle, or the look of pride when a toddler strikes the triangle at precisely the right moment when the clock strikes "one" in "Hickory Dickory Dock." I've watched older children pause to help a younger classmate put away a drum, and have seen the pure joy in a baby's eyes as they grasp a mallet to play the lollipop drum for the first time, all from the supportive comfort of their proud parent's arms. Every single week, in these moments, I see lives changing. Dr. Suzuki once said, "Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline, and endurance. They get a beautiful heart." In today's world, that's precisely what we need: more people with beautiful hearts. With one grant from SAI Philanthropies, Inc., you made it possible for me to reach hundreds of children and parents, and to train teachers who have, in turn, reached hundreds more. Thank you, SAI, for these gifts that truly keep on giving. Danette Warren is an active SAI alumnae member and initiate of the Iota Epsilon chapter at Indiana University.
