4 Summer 2026 • sai-national.org SAIs In The News Ruth Sieber Johnson, Executive Director Emerita of Sigma Alpha Iota, is the recipient of the 2026 Evin C. Varner, Jr. Award. Presented annually at the Fraternity Communications Association (FCA) Conference, this award recognizes those individuals who have communicated the meaning of "fraternity," and have demonstrated sincere and credible leadership and service to their Greek-letter organization. Ruth, an SAI since her 1982 initiation into the Epsilon Tau chapter (University of Arkansas Little Rock), served as Executive Director from 1992–2024. In her acceptance speech at the FCA Awards, Ruth stated: When my Sigma Alpha Iota career started in 1984 as a Province Officer volunteer, the three modes of communication available to me were in-person, telephone, or the US mail… as the process changed through the years, the intent did not. I know this is what we all strive for—communicating with our members and our organizations in the most effective ways possible to share our missions and our profound love for the members. We use the myriad ways that provide opportunities for us to grow in skills, integrity, inspiration, and affection. In over forty years of membership, Ruth has exemplified this "sincere and credible leadership" in her work as not only Executive Director, but as a Province President, Province Officer, National Newsletter Director, and a charter member of the Little Rock Alumnae Chapter. In 2025, she was Convention Honoree and keynote speaker at the 51st SAI National Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Sigma Alpha Iota, and the Fraternity Communications Association, continue to honor and celebrate Ruth for her dedicated service and love to the Fraternity. For over 100 years, the Fraternity Communications Association (formerly the College Fraternity Editors Association) has been a prime force behind the founding, organization, and proliferation of the fraternity movement. The Evin C. Varner, Jr., award has been presented annually since 1985, named for its first recipient and Past President of the CFEA.
