A Word from the National President SAI Philanthropies, Inc. Distinguished Members Reviews In Memoriam Symphony Society Opportunities DEPARTMENTS 4 6 34 38 41 44 48 Dear Readers, Here in the northeast, the first signs of Autumn are in the air. Yellow leaves swirl across the road on a morning commute, and the air is tinged with a crisp coolness that begs to be accompanied by a hot drink (pumpkin-flavored, for many of us). Students are clustered at bus stops in the early hours, and though I haven't had a first day of school in twenty years, I still feel that "new year" excitement. But we all feel the giddiness—collegiates are returning to campuses; alumnae are hosting kickoff meetings and socials. Autumn offers new beginnings and a fresh start. With that in mind, the annual awards issue of PAN PIPES is timely. Throughout this issue, we applaud our award and grant winners of the previous academic year. Our recipients exemplify the ideals of Sigma Alpha Iota through their leadership, research, service projects, and professional development. As collegiate and alumnae kick off a new academic year, may they be inspired by those sisters whose names appear on our special awards section. Our membership is comprised of performers, scholars, and volunteers who go above and beyond. They help elementary schools with their music programs. They organize festivals and concerts for local communities. They host drives for professional attire, instruments, and cold weather gear. Take inspiration from their stories as you plan for the year ahead. No project is too small or too large! In this issue, we also honor the lives of Honorary Members Dolly Parton and Ann Schein; we talk with Jouelle Roberson about her career in opera; and we learn about the weird and wonderful musical creations of Erwin Stache. There is also more information about our ongoing Capital Campaign, which is SAI Philanthropies, Inc.'s five-year plan to maintain and further beautify our National Headquarters. Looking ahead, our next PAN PIPES submission deadline is November 15, for the annual composers issue. If you have a story or interview to share, get in touch! I can always be reached at SAIPanPipesEditor@gmail.com. In the meantime, may you all experience the joy of what this new academic year will bring, however that looks for you. Fraternally, Angela C.
