Works should be 3 to 6 minutes in duration. All composers born after January 1, 1979, are eligible. The winning composer will receive a $1,000 award and an opportunity to visit Seattle for the world premiere. The theme of this call is Japan. The theme could include pieces inspired by Japanese musical or visual art works (either traditional or contemporary) or pieces using technical elements found in Japanese music. New works by Japanese composers are also welcome; however, works will be judged on their artistic merits and not on the nationality of the composer. The winning piece will be featured as a highlight of the 30th Anniversary of the orchestra in the season finale, April 26-27, 2014. The winning prize is $3,000. Preference will be given to pieces that incorporate influences or inspirations from the Rocky Mountain Region. Submissions should be 8 – 20 minutes in length. The Chamber Orchestra will provide the winner with a concert quality recording of the piece with no use restrictions. The ensemble's 12 musicians, many of whom have played together since the 1980s, perform in different combinations, using strings, winds, guitar and piano to present a wide range of repertoire. The group has commissioned over 55 new works, and carries on a tradition of performing the very best that the composers of today have to offer. The ensemble seeks 10 to 20-minute compositions for combinations of the specifics instrumentation for 1-7 players (see website). A prize of $1,500 will be awarded, and the piece will be performed during the 2014-2015 concert season. The winning composer will receive a recording of the live performance. Graduate or undergraduate students currently enrolled in a music composition or jazz program are eligible to apply. Applicants will compose a new work based on melodic material provided with the guidelines listed on their website. Compositions may include fragments or combinations of one or more of the folk melodies provided. First Prize receives $1,000, performance of work, and live recording.
