Editor's Notes H Dear Readers, ow have you been trying to beat the heat this summer? In the Boston area, we've been having one of the hottest summers on record! Keeping that in mind, we've put together some of the summer's hottest musical happenings that we think are really cool. The Oak Park Alumnae Chapter teamed up with the Oak Park Library to sponsor a master class by SAI Honorary Member, Rachel Barton Pine. Many of you may remember her amazing performance of "Rush" by Augusta Read Thomas at the 2009 Sigma Alpha Iota National Convention in Chicago. She continues to educate interested students on a regular basis, giving around one master class a week. Marty McIntyre provides us with an in depth look at this master class, and some of the great educational tips that Rachel Barton Pine provided to the students. Eric Whitacre has developed an innovative new way to combine music and technology in his Virtual Choir project. He is an award-winning choral composer, with a vision consisting of combining virtual submissions from vocalists around the world in order to create an electronic choir of over 5,900 singers from 101 countries. His most recent project, VC4, performs his new composition, "Fly to Paradise," from his musical, Paradise Lost. Have you seen the reality show called America's Got Talent on NBC? Two SAI sisters are competing in a group called 3 Penny Chorus and Orchestra, which is vying for the grand prize of $1 million. In this show, variety acts compete in front of a panel of four celebrity judges, with the hopes of making it on to the finals which will take place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. How has 3 Penny Chorus and Orchestra done in the competition so far? In the Summer 2012 issue of PAN PIPES, we ran an article by SAI National Arts Associates Clifford Brooks and Roger Ames about the "Music! Words! Opera!" series. This series introduces opera in a form that both teachers and students can enjoy. According to the authors, "Music! Words! Opera! was the first set of sequenced resource materials designed to guide students through the discovery of how opera relates to them and how they can create, produce and perform their own works." We have an update in this issue from them about the module and what it can provide to you as a teacher. Finally, PAN PIPES needs your submissions! Do you have an interesting or unique musical performance that you are creating or participating in this fall? Have you visited a musically historical site that you want to tell us about? Are you participating in a national or international competition? Are you conducting research in a musical field that you'd like to share with us? PAN PIPES wants to hear from you! Contact me at panpipeseditor@gmail.com to discuss our submission guidelines. Sincerely, Heather Davis, Editor 2 PAN PIPESSUMMER 2013 sai-national.org 2015 NATIONAL CONVENTION St. Louis July 23-27 Watch for updates soon!
