RESTORED! Editor's Notes I Dear Readers, hope you're all having as exciting a summer as I am! To me, summertime is a great time to try learning something new, visit new places, and meet new people. I'm certain that many of our SAI sisters did just that during our triennial national convention in Atlanta this summer. For those who couldn't make it, we will be printing stories and photos about the convention highlights in the next issue. You can read all about some wonderful advancements and achievements that others have been working on throughout the year. Clifford Brooks and Roger Ames have been working on the Music! Words! Opera! set of sequenced resource materials for children that you may want to include in your lesson plans this fall. This magnificent series was designed to help children learn how opera relates to them, and how they can learn to create their own. It's a combination of music, storytelling, and drama that is both educational and fun at the same time. In this issue, our cover story is about the history of the Tony Awardwinning musical, The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess. From its birthplace to its stars, SAI has been involved in the entire process. Be sure to read all about it, and check out the spectacular photos. Saving the Music: Kappa Chapter to the Rescue! is a fabulous follow-up to a Summer 2011 article called Saving the Music – Nebraska Style! In this article, we trace the story of the Lincoln Public School district fire and how SAIs came to the rescue to help rebuild their program. What have you been working on this year? PAN PIPES wants to know! We love to have articles about service projects, music education, women in music, and other unique subject material that our readers can learn from and apply to their own lives on a local or national scale. If you would like to write an article, please feel free to contact me at panpipeseditor@gmail. com, and I'll be happy to answer any questions you have. Small articles are generally between 850 – 900 words, medium articles are between 1,500 – 1,700 words, and large articles are 2,500 – 2,700 words. Please attach all photos separately in the largest format you have available. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy the rest of your summer, and for those of you returning to school in the fall, have a great semester! T he Virginia A. Johnson Sculpture once again graces National Headquarters. Original sculptor Jim Millar restored the statue after it was vandalized in May 2011 and delivered to Headquarters just in time to be seen by those SAIs touring Asheville immediately following National Convention.
