An Associate Professor at Michigan State University, Dr. VanHandel teaches a variety of music theory courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. She was previously a visiting assistant professor at the University of Oregon and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a teacher and lecturer at Stanford University and the University of New Mexico. Her research interests include the relationship between music and language, computer-assisted music research, music perception and cognition, and how music cognition can affect music theory pedagogy She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music Theory from Ohio State University, a Masters's Degree in Music Theory from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and her Doctorate in Music Theory and Acoustics from Stanford University.
