OPPORTUNITIES SAI Music Education Outreach Grants Honoring the longtime focus SAI has given to music education, the Music Education Outreach Grant offers a grant to assist music programs in public schools, at any grade level, K-12. This grant may be applied for once every three years, and will not exceed $5,000. Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies Inc., reserves the right not to award a grant if no applicant is judged to be sufficiently qualified. Requirements: Eligible applicants must be: • an initiated member of SAI or sponsored BY an initiated member of SAI • applying/sponsoring SAI must be in good financial standing with the fraternity • current with national fees Deadline: May 30, 2012 Website: sai-national.org + + + The Molinari Quartet's Fifth International Competition for Composition Composers are invited to submit an original work for string quartet. The best compositions will be played in concert during the Molinari Quartet's Twentieth and Beyond series to be held in Montreal during the 2012-2013 season. The jury will consist of Molinari Quartet's artistic director, its musicians, and well-known Canadian composers Jean Lesage et Nicols Gilbert who will determine four winners. The winning compositions will be performed by the Molinari Quartet during a special concert during the 2012-2013 season. After the concert performance the jury will deliberate and choose the order of the winners. The First Prize winner shall receive a $3,000 grant as well as a silkscreen by renowned Canadian artist Guido Molinari. The second prize winner will receive a $2,000 grant and the third prize winner a $1,000 grant. The jury reserves the right not to grant all three prizes. The winners will be invited to work with the Molinari Quartet prior to the concert and to participate in the Dialogues at the Chapelle, a public workshop of discussions and analysis produced by the Molinari Quartet. T he National Executive Board will be appointing a new Chairman of SAI Philanthropies, Inc. following the 2012 convention. Daryle Gardner-Bonneau, who served as NVP-Finance from 2002 to 2009 and as Philanthropies Chairman for the past triennium, has announced that she will be stepping down as she continues her career in engineering consulting. Applications for this appointed volunteer position will be accepted through next July. The Chairman presides at all Philanthropies Board meetings (usually once or twice a year) and attends meetings of the Fraternity's National Executive Board (twice a year). She sees that all resolutions and directives of the Board are carried out through the coordinators and project directors of SAI Philanthropies. Interested SAIs with qualifications for leading a non-profit, charitable organization should submit a complete resumé to SAI's National President, Elizabeth Nordling, at natlpres@sai-national.org. 22 PAN PIPES WINTER 2012 sai-national.org Music Composition Prize is an international competition for composers sponsored by the University of Connecticut. The prize carries important rewards including performances and recording as well as a first prize of $25,000. The 2012 prize will be for a composition of 25 to 35 minutes for Brass Quintet and Wind Ensemble. Composers of any nationality are welcome to enter. There are no restrictions of any kind as to musical style or compositional approach. Materials will be returned upon request. The Contest was established as a part of its mission «to encourage composers to write new works for the harp and to promote the harp and harp music.
