distinguished members NATIONAL ARTS ASSOCIATE a man or woman who is nationally recognized for distinguished contribution to the arts Dr. Arnold Emil Burkart Dr. Arnold Emil Burkart was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Muncie Alumnae Chapter in May. Dr. Burkart attended Fresno State College as a Music Education major where he studied violin, voice, and choral directing and served as president of the Phi Mu Alpha chapter. There, he received a Bachelor's Degree in Music and a Master's Degree in Education and earned his Doctorate in Education from Ball State University. He taught music in Fresno public schools and was a music consultant for Tulare and San Benito counties in California and Supervisor of Music for Madera County Schools. During his work in California public schools, he became interested in the Orff-Schulwerk philosophy. After attending a workshop at the University of Toronto, he received a federal grant to establish a pilot program which achieved nationwide acclaim. His success with OrffSchulwerk lead him to Ball State University where he became Assistant Professor of Music Education and coordinator of summer Orff workshops for many years. At Ball State, Dr. Burkart was instrumental in establishing the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, serving as National President and National Executive Secretary. He has conducted Orff-Schulwerk workshops in at least 35 states as well as Canada, Austria, Germany, England, France, Hungary, South Africa, and Taiwan. He edited and published the quarterly magazines, Keeping Up with OrffSchulwerk in the Classroom and Keeping Up with Kodaly Concepts in the Classroom, and Keeping Up with Experimental Music in the Classroom. He taught at the international annual English 40 PAN PIPES WINTER 2012 sai-national.org summer Orff-Schulwerk workshops at the Orff Institute in Salzburg, and International English Music Workshops sponsored by the Internationale Gesellschaft für Musik Pedagagische Fortbildung, serving on the International Board of this organization for many years. He was Coordinator of Graduate Studies for the School of Music at Ball State where he was instrumental in the establishment of the Doctor of Arts program. He also spent a oneyear sabbatical in Taiwan as Professor of Music Education in the Taipei Municipal Teachers College, teaching Orff children's classes and Orff workshops for teachers. After retirement, he as authored two books, Songs and Tunes of the Scottich Enlightenment, 1780-1820 (2004); and The Orff-Schulwerk Handbook (2005). Dr. Burkart has been a member of NAfME and the State Board of Directors of the Indiana Music Educators Association and served as Festival Coordinator for the San Joaquin Valley Section of the California Music Educators Association, Vice- President and President of Indiana Elementary Music Educators Association, and is an Honorary Member of the South Africa Orff Association. From 1972-1976, Marina studied in the Bulgarian National Academy of Music and finished with a Master's Degree in Violin – Performer and Teacher. As a member of the Student Chamber Orchestra, she toured Italy, Netherlands, Germany, and France. From 1976-1978, she finished her postgraduate specialization in the Moscow Conservatory P.I. Tchaikovsky. Marina was a soloist and assistant concert master of the Bulgarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and many other ensembles between 1978 and1990. She also was the concert master for the Collegium Musicum Theatrale chamber orchestra and String Quartet LIRA, touring Bulgaria, Italy, and Spain between 1980 and 1986. Between 1990 and 1995, Marina played first violin in the Sinfonieorchester Thueringen, Gotha, Germany. She was also a member of the String Trio Gotha with concerts throughout Germany. She emigrated with her family to Canada in 1995. Subsequently, she was a member of the Toronto Philharmonia, Toronto Symphony, Oshawa Durham Symphony, Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, Sinfonia Toronto, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Windsor Symphony, and TSS Quartet. She was also an affiliated teacher with the Royal Conservatory in Toronto and itinerary teacher at the Toronto School Board of Education (strings program). From 2010 Marina played with many chamber music ensembles and benefit concerts in New Jersey, New York, and San Francisco such as Symphony Silicon Valley, Mission Chamber Orchestra, Master Sinfonia, and Peninsula Symphony. Dr. Lin Foulk Marina Dantcheva Marina Dantcheva was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the San Francisco Alumnae Chapter in November. Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Maria started violin and piano lessons at the age of 7 at the Bulgarian State Music School for Gifted Children after which she continued at the State Music High School. At the same time, as a member of the Bulgarian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Pioneer (ages 13-20), she participated in many tours in Brazil, Italy, Switzerland, and Spain. At the age of 19 in 1972, she won the first prize at the Middlesborough, England International Competition for Strings. Dr. Lin Foulk was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Beta Eta Chapter in January. Dr. Foulk is Assistant Professor of Horn at Western Michigan University (WMU), where she teaches horn, coaches chamber ensembles, and is a member of the internationally recognized Western Brass Quintet. Originally from Macon, MO, she has been committed to music since her early teens, receiving the Governor's Scholar Award (sponsored attendance at the Interlochen Arts Camp) and a National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts Award in 1994. Dr. Foulk received the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Bachelor's of Music Degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
