OPPORTUNITIES SAI TRIENNIAL OPPORTUNITIES Winners of these scholarships, grants and awards are announced at the triennial SAI Convention. All application postmark deadlines are March 15 of Convention years unless otherwise indicated. Applicants must be members in good financial standing with the Fraternity, and have paid National Dues. Graduate Performance Awards The 2012 Triennial Graduate Performance Awards are offered to Sigma Alpha Iota applicants enrolled or accepted into a graduate study program leading to a Master's or Doctoral degree in music. Scholarships will be awarded based on taped auditions in each of the following categories: 1) Voice (Blanche Z. Hoffman Memorial Award) 2) Piano & Percussion (Mary Ann Starring Memorial Award) 3) Strings or Harp (Dorothy E. Morris Memorial Award) 4) Woodwinds or Brass (Mary Ann Starring Memorial Award) Scholarships will be applied directly to recipient's tuition for program/school in US dollars. Up to eight awards in the above mentioned categories may be awarded: $2,000 each for first place; $1,500 each for second place. Contact: Project Director Libby M. Works for church organ solo in accordance with the motif of the festival 'Home and Abroad', duration between 8-12 minutes. Prize: €2000 (approximately $2,700 US). Works for ensemble of between 2-12 players, duration between 5-15 minutes. Prizes: €1300; €700 (approximately $1,800 and $950 US).Entry fee: €5 (approximately $70 US). Deadline: Jan. 31, 2012 Contact: info@musicadellesfere.it/ Website: musicadellesfere.it/ The Molinari Quartet's Fifth International Competition for Composition Composers are invited to submit an original work for string quartet. The best compositions will be played in concert during the Molinari Quartet's Twentieth and Beyond series to be held in Montreal during the 20122013 season. The jury will consist of Molinari Quartet's artistic director, its musicians, and well-known Jazz Performance Awards Prizes of $2,000 (winner) and $1,500 (runner-up) are offered to college initiated members of SAI enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs in jazz studies or performance. Winners perform at National Convention. Applications will be available in the Convention year. Contact: Project Director Jaide Fried-Massin, toffuti@hotmail.com Scholarships for Undergraduate Performance Four $1,500 scholarships will be offered to undergraduate members of Sigma Alpha Iota for instrumentalists and vocal performance. Applicants must be returning to school in the fall as undergraduates. Scholarships will be awarded based on taped auditions in Voice; Keyboard & Percussion; Strings; Winds and Brass. Applications will be available in the Convention year. Contact: Project Director Leslie C. Nelson, lct319@aol.com Canadian composers Jean Lesage et Nicols Gilbert who will determine four winners. The winning compositions will be performed by the Molinari Quartet during a special concert during the 2012-2013 season. After the concert performance the jury will deliberate and choose the order of the winners. The First Prize winner shall receive a $3,000 grant as well as a silkscreen by renowned Canadian artist Guido Molinari. The second prize winner will receive a $2,000 grant and the third prize winner a $1,000 grant. The jury reserves the right not to grant all three prizes. The winners will be invited to work with the Molinari Quartet prior to the concert and to participate in the Dialogues at the Chapelle, a public workshop of discussions and analysis produced by the Molinari Quartet. The prize carries important rewards including performances and recording as well as a first prize of $25,000. The 2012 prize will be for a composition of 25 to 35 minutes for Brass Quintet and Wind Ensemble. Composers of any nationality are welcome to enter. There are no restrictions of any kind as to musical style or compositional approach. Materials will be returned upon request. Maud Powell's Favorites, a four-volume publication of the violin transcriptions of Maud Powell, is available for teachers and students alike.
