The Healing Power of Music Editor's Notes 46 th National Convention "The Healing Power of Music" I Dear Readers, n this issue, we are covering many different genres of music, from opera to country, and from classical to rock. The theme was inspired by Donnie and Marie Osmond, and is, "A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock and Roll." We are celebrating these varied types of music, and the impact they've had on popular music. While all different, they are equally powerful forms of music which have the ability to evoke strong feelings in the listener. We are proud to welcome Dolly Parton as a distinguished member of Sigma Alpha Iota. She is an icon in the country music world, and a role model for many people due to her philanthropic activities and the assistance she provides to thousands of school children. She is one of the most successful female country artists of all time, receiving 8 Grammy Awards, and 45 Grammy Award nominations. She has also been inducted into the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame. Dolly Parton is a living legend, and we're so happy that we can share her story with you in Pan Pipes. Of A Revolution (O.A.R.) is an American rock band which has become a hit among college students. Their new rock album, King, has made it to number 2 on the U.S. Rock Chart. Elora Walsh wrote a great review of the album, providing you with helpful information about the tracks it contains, and the different styles of music that you'll hear. Three recent alumnae members from the Delta Nu Chapter, Christie Dashiell, Mariah Maxwell, and Danielle Withers, are currently competing on NBC's The Sing-Off, as part of the group Afro-Blue. The winners of The Sing-Off will receive $200,000 cash and a Sony Music recording contract. These wonderfully talented sisters were generous enough to speak to Pan Pipes about their experiences on the show, giving you a backstage look into this a cappella singing competition. Afro-Blue is a jazz group, but was required to sing various genres of music as part of their challenges received from the judges each week on The Sing-Off. Yolanda Johnson takes us on a different journey through her article, Putting Modern History to Music Through Opera. She portrayed the role of Anita Hill, and the opera tells the story of the 1991 Senate Judiciary confirmation hearings regarding Judge Clarence Thomas' Supreme Court appointment. As Donnie and Marie said so eloquently, "I like that peaceful easy feeling of a laid-back country song / And when I sing my rock 'n roll, I can sing it all night long." I hope you enjoy reading about these music genres, as much as I love listening to them.
