DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS Kentucky Outstanding Contributor to Bands Award, and is a recipient of the Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity International Outstanding Contributor to Bands Award, presented at the 60th Annual Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. Dr. Miles is an active member of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, MENC, Kentucky Music Educators Association, and is an elected member to the professional honorary associations of Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Beta Mu, and the American Bandmasters Association. He is also a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Dr. Miles holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Appalachian State University and the University of Illinois, respectively, and a Doctorate from Florida State University. Dr. Rebecca Phillips Dr. Rebecca Phillips was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Theta Chi Chapter in April. Dr. Phillips is the Director of Athletic Bands and Associate Director of Bands at the University of South Carolina where she is responsible for conducting the Concert Band, teaching graduate and undergraduate instrumental conducting, supervising student teachers, and serving as director of the summer band camps. Dr. Phillips earned her Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from The Florida State University. After teaching secondary school in Florida, she earned her Master's of Music degrees in Wind Conducting and Trombone Performance at the University of South Florida. There, Phillips taught brass technique and applied trombone courses, assisted with the USF Marching Band, and directed the basketball pep band. In addition, she was an adjunct instructor of low brass at Manatee Community College. From 2001-2004, Phillips served as Director of Bands at Howard W. Blake Performing Arts High School in Tampa, where she developed an awardwinning concert band program. In 2007, Phillips completed her Doctorate of Musical Arts in wind conducting at Louisiana State University where she served as a graduate assistant with the Tiger Marching Band and the Bengal Brass basketball pep bands.She also served as guest conductor of the Wind Ensemble, the Symphonic Winds, and the Symphonic Band. Under her direction, the LSU Wind Ensemble performed the school's premiere of John Mackey's Turbine and David del Tredici's In Wartime, the latter of which was produced on the Louisiana State University Band's 2005 CD project. She also conducted the world premiere of Brett Dietz's Crop Circles with the LSU Symphonic Winds. Dr. Phillips's conducting teachers have included National Arts Associate Dr. William Wiedrich and Friend of the Arts Dr. Patrick Dunnigan. She served as a clinician throughout the southeast and as guest conductor of the Florida State University Symphonic Band, the USF Wind Ensemble, and various high-school honor bands. As a trombonist, she has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra, U.S. Army Band (Pershing's Own), the Tallahassee Symphony, and the Tampa Bay Opera Orchestra. She has also performed internationally in England, Mexico, the Caribbean, Russia, and Sweden, and has toured as a trombonist with Johnny Mathis and Barry Manilow. The President and Executive Director of the Hochstein School of Music and Dance, Dr. Quackenbush also assumed a leadership role in the National Guild of Community Music Schools of the Arts. An active soloist, chamber and orchestral clarinetist, Dr. Quackenbush is a founding member of Antara Winds, a woodwind quintet that has performed extensively in concert and broadcast. She has performed frequently with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Chamber Music Rochester, Mercury Opera, and other ensembles. During the time she has held the office of President and Executive Director, she fostered international tours by students, prepared students for professional careers, hired and fired staff, set up a computer lab, justified a satellite school in Canandaigua, and managed two capital fund campaigns. The result is that Hochstein has become a leader in the community music school tradition in the United States. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music, with distinction, from the University of Minnesota Morris, a Master's Degree in Music History from the University of Oregon School of Music, and a Doctorate in Performance from the Eastman School of Music. Dr. Margaret Quackenbush Dr. Margaret "Peggy" Quackenbush was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Rochester Alumnae Chapter in May. Dr. Todd Sullivan Dr. Todd Sullivan was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Delta Eta Chapter in June. Dr. Todd Sullivan is Professor and Director of the School of Music at Northern Arizona University (NAU). Before joining the NAU School of Music in 2006, he taught at Indiana State University — where he also served as Chairman of the Department of Music — Northwestern University, and DePaul University.
