distinguished members ASSOCIATES continued from page 21 received a number of Aaron Copland Awards from the American Music Center, and has been awarded National Endowment for the Arts grants several times for his compositional work.  Dr. Judith Cloud Dr. Judith Cloud was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Delta Eta Chapter in June. The Coordinator of Voice at Northern Arizona University (NAU) and studio voice and vocal pedagogy instructor, Dr. Cloud is an accomplished mezzo–soprano soloist and composer who has performed throughout the United States, premiering many new works by young composers in addition to her own music. She received performance degrees from the North Carolina School of the Arts and Florida State University and was a member of the music faculty for The North Carolina School of the Arts, Florida Community College at Jacksonville, and Indiana State University.  She has appeared at the Aspen Music Festival, with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the Tallahassee Symphony, the Jacksonville Symphony, the Sedona Chamber Music Festival, the Flagstaff Festival of the Arts Orchestra, and the Rome Festival Orchestra.  A career highlight was a performance of the Brahms Neueliebeslieder Waltzer with the acclaimed radio program Saint Paul Sunday Morning.  She has also sung with Composers Circle in New York and with the University of California at Berkeley Orchestra on several occasions.  She has been an artist-in-residence with the noted Escape to Create program sponsored by the Seaside (FL) Institute for two seasons.  One of her recent compositions, Philsophia Perennis, for men's chorus, mezzo, flugelhorn, and piano, 22 was commissioned and performed by the NAU Men's Chorus. The Shrine of the Ages Choir, directed by Dr. Edith Copley, recently performed Long, Long Ago, during the annual Holiday Dinner concert at NAU. Dr. Cloud has sung many works with orchestra, including Ravel's Shéhérezade, Bernstein's Jeremiah Symphony, Mahler's Second Symphony and Fourth Symphony, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Mendelssohn's Elijah, and the Verdi Requiem.  She has also been the alto soloist for many performances of the works of J. S. Bach, including the B Minor Mass, the St.John Passion, and the St. Matthew Passion.  In addition to orchestral performances, Dr. Cloud is an active recitalist and sings with the NAU Faculty Chamber Players. Works performed in recent years include Ancient Voices of Children by George Crumb, Schubert vocal quartets, an evening of Bach arias, and Ravel's Trois Chansons de Stéphane Mallarmé.  Dr. Cloud performed the role of Madame Armfeldt in Sondheim's A Little Night Music with the NAU Opera Theater under the direction of Nando Schellen, appeared with the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra in performances of Amahl and the Night Visitors, and conducted NAU Opera Theater performances of Dido and Aeneas and Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro. Other conducting credits include performances of Handel's Messiah, Benjamin Britten's Saint Nicholas, and Haydn's Creation.  Dr. Cloud's vocal students have entered and won state and regional competitions. Graduates in vocal performance and theater have gone on to begin careers in opera and musical theater in the United States and abroad. Dr. Steven Curtis Dr. Steven Curtis was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Alpha Iota Chapter in April. Dr. Curtis recently retired from Oklahoma University after 27 years of service, including stints as Director of the Oklahoma University School of Music and of the University Chamber Singers. His choirs appeared at state, regional, and national music conventions. He has conducted choirs for elementary, middle, and high schools and college at the district, regional, and state levels throughout the United States. He adjudicates extensively throughout the country. He is a specialist in the changing voices of young male performers and has presented at conferences and conventions on this topic. In 1989, he was named the Outstanding Professor for the Norman Campus by the University of Oklahoma Student Association. In July1996, PAN PIPES SUMMER 2011 sai-national.org he was named Director of Distinction by the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association. Dr. Curtis holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Southeast Missouri State University, a Master's of Music Education Degree from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, and a Doctorate in Music Education from the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Curtis is the Director of Music at the Norman First Christian Church. He is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, Oklahoma Music Educators Association, American Choral Directors Association, and is a Past-President of the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association. Daryl W. Durran Daryl W. Durran was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Eta Phi Chapter in April. Associate Professor of Music Daryl Durran joined the Penn State School of Music faculty in 1983. He teaches bassoon, coaches wind chamber music, and is bassoonist with The Pennsylvania Quintet. A native of Los Angeles, he holds degrees from the University of Arizona and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Prior to his appointment at Penn State, Durran served as principal bassoonist of the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra and the Waukesha Symphony Orchestra and was a frequent performer with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. In addition, he has taught at the National Music Camp at Interlochen and the American Band College in Ashland, OR. Durran performs as principal bassoonist of the Pennsylvania Centre Chamber Orchestra and has been a member of the Festival of Two Worlds Orchestra in Spoleto, Italy, and the Britt Festival Orchestra, Jacksonville, OR. For nine seasons, he was principal bassoonist of the Music at Penn's Woods Festival Orchestra. As a chamber music player, he has appeared in concert halls throughout the United States and Europe. He is an active member of the International Double Reed Society, regularly offering presentations at the society's conferences, and is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Dr. Donna Emmanuel Dr. Donna Emmanuel was initiated as a National Arts Associate by the Iota Theta Chapter in April. An Associate Professor at the University of North Texas, Dr. Donna Emmanuel serves as coordinator of the Ph.D. program in Music Education in the university's College of Music.
