OPPORTUNITIES New Choral Composition Competition SAI PHILANTHROPIES INC. SCHOLARSHIPS & GRANTS Deadline: Sept. 1, 2011 Inter-American Music Awards A triennial competition for composers established in 1948, the Inter-American Music Awards are open to composers residing in North, Central and South America, with no age limit. Two major American composers are invited to judge each IAMA competition. In addition to their judging responsibilities, the composerjudges each write a work to be published in the Sigma Alpha Iota IAMA series. Current or former students of either of the announced judges are ineligible to apply. The 2012 composer-judges are SAI Member Laureate Linda Robbins Coleman and National Arts Associate John Heins. This triennium's composition will be a piece for strings and optional piano, for up to five performers (trio, quartet, piano trio, piano quartet) that can be played by high- Foothills Chorale announces an international competition which offers a $1,000 cash award for an unpublished, never-before-performed-in-a-ticketedvenue choral composition. The Chorale offers this competition as part of its upcoming 20th Anniversary season's celebrations (July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012). This is an anonymous (aka "blind") competition which is open to all composers (except where prohibited by law), with no restriction on age, gender, nationality, professional status, organizational membership, race, religion, or any other category. The composition must be a choral work of at least four vocal parts for SATB choir; this is not an instrumental or solo vocal composition competition. It must be an original composition, not an arrangement. It must be a work of a single movement and not part of a "cycle" or other grouping of pieces. Thus, an extract from a longer work is not acceptable. The competition will be judged by a panel of professional composers and musicians. It just happens. I just realized that the last composition master class I attended had three young men on stage, even though there are women in the teacher's studio. We do have to think about it; we have to do something about it. If a composer writes reams of music but never is performed, that composer does not exist. We are deprived of her voice, her heart, her talent, her gifts and her ability to inspire "the composer" in future women musicians.
