6 2 nd ANNUAL AMERICAN COMPOSERS U P D AT E Compiled by Susan Cohn Lackman, Composers Bureau Director Lackman Takes Stage As Bureau Director D elta Mu initiate and Composers Bureau Member Dr. Susan Cohn Lackman was named Bureau Director in 2010, succeeding Alpha Sigma initiate and International Chapter Member Jane Ellen. Ellen held the position for 12 years. "I hope I can be a worthy successor to Jane Ellen," Lackman said. "She did a fabulous job for such a long time!" An active SAI since her initiation into Delta Mu at Temple University, Lackman has held officer positions in both collegiate and alumnae chapters in Central New Jersey and Orlando, and she proudly wears the Rose of Honor attached to her badge. Susan has been a professor at Rollins College since receiving her Ph.D. at Rutgers University, and she's the advisor (she calls herself "fairy godmother") of Lambda Iota Chapter. A member of the Composers Bureau herself, Dr. Lackman's music has been heard from China to the Czech Republic. A tireless cheerleader for women in music, not only with Sigma Alpha Iota but also through her work with affiliate organization International Alliance for Women in Music, Susan is a lively teacher and lecturer. She teaches courses in music business and arts administration, history, counterpoint, and global & ethnic music. She has served as General Manager of Rollins College's radio station as well as Executive Director of a one-million-dollar organization that brings international orchestras to Central Florida. Dr. Lackman's main goal for the Bureau is to make it better known as a valuable resource for all SAIs, both college and alumnae. "The Purpose of Sigma Alpha Iota includes 'to further the development of music in America and throughout the world," she said. "And I can think of no better way than to encourage the living American composer through performance and commissions. When choosing music for performance and study, our SAIs should scan the Composers Bureau for appropriate music. People in Mozart's time performed the music of Mozart, and we should expand our repertoire by performing the music of our contemporaries. "Besides, shouldn't more musicians know about Sigma Alpha Iota?" Dr. Susan Cohn Lackman sai-national.org WINTER 2011 PAN PIPES 21
