OPPORTUNITIES Klezmer Company Orchestra: Call for Scores The Klezmer Company Orchestra, founded in 1997 at Florida Atlantic University Libraries, announces its inaugural composition prize, sponsored by the Jewish Cultural Society at FAU. Graduate or undergraduate students currently enrolled in a music composition or jazz program are eligible to apply. Applicants will compose a new work based on melodic material provided with the guidelines listed on their website. Compositions may include fragments or combinations of one or more of the folk melodies provided. First Prize receives $1,000, performance of work, and live recording. The theme of this call is Japan. The theme could include pieces inspired by Japanese musical or visual art works (either traditional or contemporary) or pieces using technical elements found in Japanese music. New works by Japanese composers are also welcome; however, works will be judged on their artistic merits and not on the nationality of the composer. Pieces should be for Bb clarinet and concert tuned guitar (EADGBE). No solos will be considered. The winning piece will be featured as a highlight of the 30th Anniversary of the orchestra in the season finale, April 26-27, 2014. The winning prize is $3,000. Preference will be given to pieces that incorporate influences or inspirations from the Rocky Mountain Region. Submissions should be 8 – 20 minutes in length.The Chamber Orchestra will provide the winner with a concert quality recording of the piece with no use restrictions. The Chamber Orchestra will cover travel, lodging, and per diem to attend the dress rehearsal and performances. New works should be scored for flute and clarinet only (however, works which encompass e.g. narrators/installation art/ dancers/electronic devices etc. are welcome). The ensemble's 12 musicians, many of whom have played together since the 1980s, perform in different combinations, using strings, winds, guitar and piano to present a wide range of repertoire. The group has commissioned over 55 new works, and carries on a tradition of performing the very best that the composers of today have to offer. The ensemble seeks 10 to 20-minute compositions for combinations of the specific instrumentation for 1-7 players (see website). A prize of $1,500 will be awarded, and the piece will be performed during the 2014-2015 concert season. The winning composer will receive a recording of the live performance. Composers of liturgical music are invited to submit newly composed treble settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis. The works should be approachable for the established girl/boy choir program. A panel of four distinguished musicians will judge the entries. Winners will be announced on July 1, 2014. Two prizes are to be awarded: $3,000 for first place and $2,000 for second along with performances of the works at Evensongs during the 2015 Girl Chorister Course. The awardwinning work will be on the program as a compulsory piece of music in the 3rd round of the competition "Franz Schubert and Modern Music" taking place in 2015, i.e. all ensembles in this round will play the award winner's composition. Moreover, a selected ensemble will present the awarded piece at the gala concert in the framework of the KUGsubscription at Stefaniensaal, Congress Graz. The competition has three categories: choir; solo piano; solo violin; or for violin–piano duos.
