Editor's Notes F Dear Readers, all is one of my favorite times of year. Here in New England, the leaves are changing colors, and there is a refreshingly brisk chill in the air. Fall also marks the end to the traditional "Wedding Season," as June, August, September, and October are the most popular months for weddings to take place. Why do I mention this, you ask? You may notice in this issue that I have a new last name! I was fortunate enough to be married on Sep. 7, 2013, to my wonderful husband Robert Lam in a lakeside ceremony that took place in Windham, New Hampshire. From this issue forward, I will be writing and editing under my married name, Heather Lam. Stephen Sondheim was recently awarded the 2013 Edward MacDowell Medal during the Medal Day ceremony at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Over 2,200 people gathered to watch the medal ceremony, enjoy a picnic lunch, and take open studio tours guided by the artists-in-residence. SAI is strongly tied to the MacDowell Colony via Pan's Cottage, the largest residence facility at the Colony, which was donated by SAI. Have you ever wondered how to go about choosing the best substitute teacher to manage your classroom when you're away? The Music Medley column by Mandy Maldonado walks us through the qualities of a good substitute teacher, and how some substitute teachers use their skills to transition into a full time position. Pan Pipes is thrilled to share the experiences of Angela Bethoney, recipient of the Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies, Inc. Kennedy Center Internship. She was fortunate enough to meet Joshua Bell, Grammy Award-winning violinist, and perform with the orchestra in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. She describes in detail the duties assigned to her during her internship, and what she learned from the experience. Why should you apply for the Kennedy Center Internship? Angela shares her opinions, and talks about how she will be applying what she's learned to her education and career. Many of you are working on new compositions, performing regularly, and teaching others about music. Have you just finished performing on a national musical theater tour? Premiered an opera overseas? The winter issue of Pan PipeS traditionally features stories about members of the SAI Composers Bureau. Are you an SAI Composers Bureau member who has just completed a new major work? We'd love to hear about your process, and about what inspired you to create this piece. Pan Pipes is seeking articles about subjects like music education, music performance, composition, music theory, and other nationally relevant music topics. Please submit your article to me at panpipeseditor@gmail.com. I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon! Sincerely, Heather Lam, Editor 4 PAN PIPES Fall 2013 sai-national.org 2015 NATIONAL CONVENTION St. Louis, July 23-27 See page inside back cover!
